Should U.S. Schools Observe Muslim Holidays?

Featured Replies

Yep...

Admittedly, I don't know much about the Muslim faith. What is it that they believe that gives them the religious right to beat their wives?

Double speak Clyde.... If a Muslim can't beat his wife then we are denying his religious rights..

I missed this post.

Incorrect. All religions still have to abide by US law. That's a simple concept.

I guess I will if that's what it takes for you to respond.

The slippery slope you mention is indeed slippery and is now leading to this exact situation.

The argument from one side would be , as you pointed out, that we do NOT take off for a Christian holiday but, rather, either a)Christmas is not a Christian holiday or b)it is but it just happens to fall during the "winter break."

I don't buy that as most people would not buy that. We would be proven correct once a school system decided that the winter break would start on Saturday December 26th and students would, indeed, be in school on Friday December 25th.

In other words, one would be lying if they said that most Christians do not think of Christmas a Christian holiday.

I did answer you?

In my mind Christmas is a Christian holiday, but why can't it just be an American holiday/tradition? If I want to celebrate it through my religious views, I can. If you don't believe in it, cool...you and our family just got a few weeks off school? Funny thing is, Christmas is where it is because of an old pagan holiday.

And like I said previously, if we give off days for Muslims, we better do it for Buddhists, other random religions that I don't know about. Heck, students get off for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, what if the Aryian Brotherhood/KKK thought we should get Hitler's birthday off because they consider that a holiday too?

I apologize for not recognizing that the "slippery slope" comment was your answer.

You can't say Christmas is a Christian holiday and then deny other religions the same treatment just because its an "tradition."

I'd ask some of our legal experts how the courts have ruled in regards to the issue of separation of church and state in regards to Christmas.

Sharia Law...

It's already moving into Canada and Britian, not sure why its so out of question that it could in America as well.

MLK is not a religious holiday so that's immaterial.

As to your bigger point, it's an open can of worms.

But isn't that pretty much why it is no longer called Christmas break? It is now Winter Break.

In order for you to truly believe this is a possibility that would require you to believe that a court would rule that the stoning death of a woman by an irate husband who claims that it's his religious belief is acceptable. ZERO CHANCE.

Semantics does not override law.

I agree that there is zero chance now. I do not believe the same can be said many years down the road.

How dare you use the taboo word Christmas MJ. You need to refer to this as a Holiday or the Holiday season. Thought you were more politically correct than that.

Why not? It's certainly the direction we are headed. No doubt about that. This country has completely lost it's backbone. My grandfather would be rolling over in his grave.

We would not be denying him his "religious right". The law that you cannot stone people is a religiously neutral law, meaning that it applies to everyone; Jews, Christians, Atheists & Muslims alike. It has nothing to do with religion or denying anyone's "religious rights".
