Should U.S. Schools Observe Muslim Holidays?

Featured Replies

Not sure where I said it was going to become American law...I said that there are plenty out there who want it too including Muslim leaders

My fault. The point is that your worry about what they "want" is unwarranted.

How long do you think it will be before we have a Muslim on the Supreme Court??

Why does it matter?

I'd ask again how we should rationalize schools closing for Christmas but staying open for other religion's holidays. I don't think "that's the way it's always been" will fly.

Slippery Slope...where does it stop?

Better have all Buddhist holidays off. I bet the religion of the "Flying Spaghetti Monster" could make up a couple random holidays, better get those off too.

It is an American tradition to celebrate Christmas in this country. I wouldn't even make it about religion, many in our society don't anyway.

Just one step...gotta wait til it plays out. As Muslims get more control in America, I think we'll see this topic come up more often IMO.

It can come up all its wants. We're still a nation of "our" laws. How in the world can one really believe that our nation's courts are going to allow stoning of women or sexual assault?

You didn't answer the question.

You're right, and I edited my post...

So are you FOR denying Muslims their religious rights... Or do you want to condone public stoning, etc. in America..

Are you going to answer mine?

You have to have some very strong legs to make that leap.

I'm for religious rights as long as they do not violate American law. I'm stunned that I have to even make such a proclamation.

What does that have to do with your question about a Muslim on the SCOTUS?

This is probably apples and oranges, but here goes.

Years ago at the mental health center from which I retired a couple of years ago, we had a counselor who was Jewish. She asked to be given Jewish holy days off; and said that she would work in the office on Christian holidays. Problem was, the clinical ofices were closed on those days; as we followed the KY state government holiday schedule.

The boss had a novel solution. She said that the counselor could be off on the Jewish holidays if she would work in one of our group homes on the Christmas holidays. At least there would be something to do in the group home setting.

The counselor wound up working on the Jewish holidays after all.

Are you going to answer mine?

I guess I will if that's what it takes for you to respond.

The slippery slope you mention is indeed slippery and is now leading to this exact situation.

The argument from one side would be , as you pointed out, that we do NOT take off for a Christian holiday but, rather, either a)Christmas is not a Christian holiday or b)it is but it just happens to fall during the "winter break."

I don't buy that as most people would not buy that. We would be proven correct once a school system decided that the winter break would start on Saturday December 26th and students would, indeed, be in school on Friday December 25th.

In other words, one would be lying if they said that most Christians do not think of Christmas a Christian holiday.

What does that have to do with your question about a Muslim on the SCOTUS?

Because the SC rules on constitutional law and surely a Muslim would want to be able to practice his freedom of religion and all that the religion entails...
Double speak Clyde.... If a Muslim can't beat his wife then we are denying his religious rights..

What? Is it their religious right to beat their wives?

What? Is it their religious right to beat their wives?
Yep...
Because the SC rules on constitutional law and surely a Muslim would want to be able to practice his freedom of religion and all that the religion entails...

First, we have 9 Justices .

Secondly, you're reaching if you think that a Muslim justice is going to think that , say, stoning is legal because its part of the Islamic religion.
