Do you think that Walt would consider the fact that Votto and Bruce are best friends before he would trade Bruce? Keep readin, and I agree about the special chemistry that this team has, and trading Jay, or even taking a healthy Jay out of the lineup would have a negative impact on this team I think.

 

Not really. I think he has Yonder Alonso to give up if someone needs a left handed bat.

There is no reason to trade Bruce ... he may not be as good as everyone would like him to be, but he's still young and has a lot of upside. The Reds could use a lefty hitter to share time with Gomes.

I don't see the Reds making any big moves at the trading deadline. I don't think they want to part with Bruce or one of their young pitchers for a minor upgrade in the outfield. I also don't think they will make much of a move to improve the bullpen via trade. They may sign Isringhausen or move a starter to the pen but seemingly everyone is looking for bullpen help and the difference makers in the bullpen won't come cheap this year. Pitchers that might be had for a mid to low level prospect are going to bring much more this season. I don't think the Reds need to give away any of their young arms for a rental.

If I were Walt Jocketty, I'd make sure I could see the forest for the trees and not wager what could be a several season run at the top of the division on a chance that he could sneak into the playoffs this season. My vote is to stand pat.

Very good. However, what do they do with Cueto, Volquez, Wood, Leake, Bailey, LeCure, Maloney, Valiquette, AND Chapman? Nine guys which could start in the show iwithin the next 2 years. Obviously five already are and two more have proven they can. Seriously, that's a ton of pitching. Someone will have to go to the pen.

LeCure will eventually be traded away. He did fine while he was up but there's no room for him. Valiquette hasn't started a game since 2006 so he'll be in the pen. That's already down to 7. You can never have enough insurance pitching incase someone gets hurt.

I keep trying to tell LRCW that I think we should see if we can make Chapman a closer. 104 with the wrong wing would be outstanding, assuming he can find the plate and pitch consecutive days an inning at a time. And IMO, you can weed out the guys in your pen with the ones you've named that don't start. If there was one guy I'd try to market, and it may be a hotstove trade is Bailey. Not to mention that these have not been the problems the Reds have faced before, a surplus of young pitching. I hate that they have to deal with it.:lol:

That's just what I'd do with LeCure. I'd trade Maloney too. They've both proven they can be useful starters, I just don't see that happening in Cincinnati.

Personally, I like the idea of having guys that have proven to be able to start in the pen. In the event you have one of your starters with a stint on the DL, plug one of them in. Bring up a Louisvillian to fill that roster spot in the pen. I know not all pitchers have that makeup, but that's just my preference.

Agree about Chapman. He's the first that comes to mind when moving one of these guys. I also agree about Bailey. Of course, he'll go somewhere else and win a Cy Young but that's the chance you take.

If he can throw strikes then I'm all for it with the number of starters the Reds have right now.

I guess the only question about Chapman to closer is, what type of offensive team are they going to put together? If they are going to score runs on a regular basis, I'm all for it. However, if they're going to struggle scoring runs I'd rather run him out there every 6th day and hope for a low scoring game.

He has too much talent to be a closer. He needs to be a starter. Maybe this year or next be in the closing role but in the end he will end up being a Cy Young starter.
