Nice article.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I 100% respect the Birds, but play Louisville Trinity and/or Louisville St. X every year, and when you beat them, then I will consider you for the mythical national crown. It is impossible to be the best in the country if you are not the best in the commonwealth.

How do you know that they weren't the best in the Commonwealth last year or won't be the best this year? You are assuming that X and T are the best. That may be quite the assumption in some years and I'd say last year was one of those years. Besides, no one (at least no one in FT) cares who you consider to be the mythical national champion any way.:D

Reversing the situation, if T had the season that Highlands did last year but didn't play Highlands, I'm assuming you'd feel the same way towards any claim by them?

Well they beat Cincy St. X so when you can scheduele them then you dont need to play Louis T or Louis St. X. Heres a question would you rather play a GCL South team that is known across the country or a team that you half to travel two hours to play? IMO ill take Cincy St. X anyday or to put a team they have on the scheduele this year Winton Woods on there.

I agree with everything you say here LN, and wonder why don't they play Trinity and X. Scrimmages don't count.

1x-that's all I will say. The greatest win in Highlands history in my opinion. Highlands record is very poor vs. the gcl south. I agree play the gcl schools annually, but don't whine when you lose 9 out of 10 times.

Again-I ask-why doesn't Highlands play X and Trinity, and I ask it from both sides. Why not really decide who is best in the state? X and Trinity play every year-as they should based on size and locale.

I don't know for sure why the don't play more often. We've played X in the past (as recently as 05 and 06. They killed us in 05 the week after Colerain beat us up badly after we were winning at half by a point. In 06 we were beating X at half and ended up losing by two TDs, the week after we played Elder and beat them every way but on the scoreboard). We've played T in the more distant past. I know that Dale and Beatty tried to get it scheduled a couple of years ago. As I hear it, Highlands would play in the last week (and avoid scheduling Ryle the second time) but T wanted to play in a different week that didn't work for Highlands. But who knows if what I'm told is accurate. Part of the non-scheduling really comes from the difficulty the schools have finding opponents. You'd think that would make it easier to schedule, but that's not necessarily the case. If a school like, say Ryle, that is in your back yard is willing to schedule you and you think it will be a long term beneficial relationship, you work hard to accomodate them in the week they are willing to play you. Ryle is a nice program that I think will continue to improve and it's very cost effective. Perhaps a series with T would be lucrative enough to offset the travel costs, but who knows. I just don't appreciate the "ducking" innuendos (not from you) that some people throw around. It makes no sense. T and X schedule some very tough competition. Highlands has played Cincy X and Colerain over the last two years. Highlands played Trotwood the first game of the year in 07 when Trotwood was expected to be all that and a bag of chips (they ended up imploding, but no one could have foreseen that) because of all the D-1 players on the team.

Could Highlands schedule more of the really tough big schools each year? Perhaps. But it would be my guess that Dale learned something in 05 and 06. I think CovCath learned that lesson also. Highlands because of its size has a really difficult time playing Colerain and Lou X, or Elder and Lou X in back to back weeks. To play T the week after we played a Colerain or Cincy X wouldn't necessarily prove that T was better if they beat us. It might instead prove that T had a lot more depth than we did however.

But who knows, perhaps if Highlands can continue to have large numbers of talented players on its team in the future and avoid having two way players like we avoided last year and will this year, perhaps the reluctance (which I'm guessing is present) to schedule two tough games back to back will go away. Until then it's a matter of trying to fit games into the right spots in the schedule. And that, as discussed earlier, isn't as easy as some want to make it seem.

I will say this when it comes to mythical national champions: my guess is that if you look at the mythical national champions over the last 10 years, you won't find one of them that beat every really good team in their state during the season, yet they were crowned mythical national champions nonetheless.

Birds need to formulate cohesiveness on the offensive line so they can give Patrick time to deal back there. I am a little surprised that they are not working Drake Bruns on the offensive side of the ball though, here is the best athlete in the school and he is only playing one side of the ball. The Birds always have superior athletes with limited varsity snaps step up and I dont see that changing anytime soon. Brenden Sullivan is one mean son of a gun and he is absolutely huge. I have no clue what kind of workout program that kid is on but I saw him walking down the street the other day with a tank top on and he was rocked up.

I seen a picture of Sullivan he's ripped what postion does he play? I would put him at RB and let him run through everybody.

With regard to HHS not playing Drake Bruns on offense, from what I've read about the most successful high school football programs in the country (especially the ones that two-platoon, as HHS is now able to do), it is typically the case for the most athletic players on a team to play on the defensive side of the ball. I guess it's best to have a great defense, first and foremost. Consider HHS back in 2004... that squad definitely had its most athletically talented players on defense, and it certainly paid dividends!

Linebacker I believe, although he also played nose in the past.

I dont have any inside info just a general observation and have talked to a few parents close to the program who have shown some concern over the line, especially with the loss of Meyer. They are in good hands with Scott Turner so you can bet they will be ready by gametime just as they have in the past.

Sweeperboy you are spot on with the special teams being a huge part of this season. Duenas is a gamebreaker and like a waterbug out there and Weinel will be key kicking the extras and FG's.

TJ- is Sullivan going to Notre Dame to workout for coaches or is it a camp?

Sully will be traveling to South Bend as part of the Defensive unit for the 7 on 7 competition this weekend. Go Birds 20n10

I still think he could be a lethal WR. Mitchell started off on D.

He could be a good WR but they are pretty deep at WR this year.
