I believe the Birds will thrive at Special Teams this yr. I see this part of the game being the difference maker in close games this yr. With Adam Weinel handling the kicking game and Kevin Duenas possibly returning kicks there will be points to be had here when it counts most. Offense will gel with game experience and nothing better than to play your first 5 at home under comfortable settings. Defense will be the anchor this yr.

Of course, this is jmo. Go Birds 20n10

This will be another year that HHS is well rounded. They have a very good and big defense. The O-Line is actually looking really good and as Sweepboy said it always helps to play the first couple games at home. As for the skill positions they are really good this year. The receiving corp is gonna be real good with Gold, Gall, Schultz, and Sheenhan. All jmo.

Good point about starting the season at home (although, isn't it the first 4 games, excluding the scrimmage against Trinity, with the 5th game being at Boone?) With pretty much an entirely new O, it's nice to get things aligned in the friendly confinces of DCM Stadium. I also agree that the D is key. If they can keep the games close (and I think they will), it will take pressure off the O and give them time to gel. Early on, this season may remind folks of the 04 team where the D kept the games close and the O scored enough points to win.

Birds need to formulate cohesiveness on the offensive line so they can give Patrick time to deal back there. I am a little surprised that they are not working Drake Bruns on the offensive side of the ball though, here is the best athlete in the school and he is only playing one side of the ball. The Birds always have superior athletes with limited varsity snaps step up and I dont see that changing anytime soon. Brenden Sullivan is one mean son of a gun and he is absolutely huge. I have no clue what kind of workout program that kid is on but I saw him walking down the street the other day with a tank top on and he was rocked up.

Totally agree Gryche11. I've seen a lot of "put together athletes" and from a physical prospective this kid, (Sullivan) is a man among boys. He will intimidate a lot of high school kids before the game even starts. He's going to Notre Dame this week. I'm anxious to see how he does. He will need to stay healthy, which has been a problem for him at times.

Exactly, I am just the type that there is no such thing as scrimmages, if you play, then you play to Win. So officially yes, 4 regulation home games to start the yr with and that other contest at home as well. :thumb: Go Birds 20n10

Do you feel this is a concern at this time, or just an observation in general?

I know exactly what Q means. Just some time together, get to know one anothers tendencies, timing and potentials. Nothing more, nothing less. If BG is suggesting kids not liking one another, or not getting along, then you are totally off base. Dale and Seniors take care of that every yr in spring ball. It happens in every program, every yr and this yr was NO EXCEPTION. Go Birds 20n10

I was not suggesting anything at all, only asking for clarification of another's post. Just wondered about the comment on cohesiveness, and if the poster had some inside knowledge or reason to question. I have heard that the O-Line is coming along nicely, so the post caught my attention.

Do you happen to know the date of the Trinity scrimmage?
07. 1 returning starter. 15-0 State Champs

08. 1 returning starter. 14-1 State Champs.

Probably not a huge concern.

I believe it was quoted as "the WORST O-line EVER at HHS"....and that was after a victorious home opener against Ryle. By the way, that line has 2 players playing at the D1 level and two more at D3. Let's just say Coach T "coached 'em up"! LOL! He'll work his magic again this year!

Friday, August 13.

I dont have any inside info just a general observation and have talked to a few parents close to the program who have shown some concern over the line, especially with the loss of Meyer. They are in good hands with Scott Turner so you can bet they will be ready by gametime just as they have in the past.

Sweeperboy you are spot on with the special teams being a huge part of this season. Duenas is a gamebreaker and like a waterbug out there and Weinel will be key kicking the extras and FG's.

TJ- is Sullivan going to Notre Dame to workout for coaches or is it a camp?

LOL....I know that poster wishes he had that one back. Might be the worst post ever and he knows it. However, I do think he had a right to be concerned after that game but not worst line ever.

Actually, I'll respectfully disagree with you (and him) as to the bolded. I sort of watch the line play closely (perhaps a small understatement). The problems we had moving the ball in that game were NOT caused by the interior O linemen. The interior linemen were getting and maintaining their blocks rather well, particularly in light if it being the first varsity game for 4 starters and their first real game working together as a unit. The problems were elsewhere. But people erroneously assume that if the ball isn't being moved, it must be the fault of the O line. Sometime when you're bored, come over the house and I'll walk you through the game tape play by play and I'm convinced you'll come to the same conclusion. To be fair to that poster, it's almost impossible to watch a game and be able to fairly analyze why something worked and why something didn't. Of course that's why coaches when asked about certain things right after a game usually say: "I'll have to watch the game tape before I can answer that question". Which might be a rule we all consider before critically analyzing any player/position.:D Or at least be ready to be taken to school when what you think you observed didn't really happen.
