Issel and Walker are no doubters IMO. Probably Cotton Nash for third. After that, it is just personal preference with many candidates for #4. Strongest arguments IMO opinion are for Mashburn, Givens and Cliff Hagan.

Issel is the ONLY no doubter.

Somewhere I remember reading that Ralph Beard was considered one of the greatest to ever play the game. I think it was him.

I would go with Mashburn as the 3rd one.

Either Wah Wah or Cotton for the 4th. Have to consult my father, an expert on UK in the 40's, 50's and 60's. They didn't lose a game since the 30's according to him. Refs and NCAA cheated them out of a lot of things, though.

I'll only do from the time I could start watching and remember UK Basketball which is 1980...so, my Mt. Rushmore would be: Kenny "Sky" Walker, Rex Chapman, Jamal Mashburn, and John Wall. Very, very hard for me to say Wall...but he appeared to be solid student, a great ambassador for UK, future #1 Draft Pick, and probably the most talented player to grace us in the last 30 years.

Dan Issel

Jamal Mashburn

Jack Givens

Kyle Macy

These are the 4 I would put on the mountain. Issel is a no brainer. Mash was the recruit that turned the program back around. Givens put on a show in the biggest stage of all. Macy could do it all for a guard in his time.

John Calipari, John Wall, D-Cuz and Patterson.

Or in reality: Issel, Monster Mash, Walker and Givens.

Issel, Wah Wah Jones, Givens, Mashburn

I agree with you on Issel and Walker. For me the other 2 would be Tayshaun and Mashburn.

I don't get the Wah Wah Jones votes. He was one of the greatest athletes ever at KY. (If memory serves he was an All SEC football player and All American his Senior Year in Basketball) However both Alex Groza and Ralph Beard were considered greater players in basketball than Jones. Beard was 3 time AA as was Groza and I think Beard was named Player of the Year Nationally by some polls.

I have to go with people representing different eras. Issel, Beard, Mash, Macy. I choose Macy because he was beloved of all UK fans, twice AA and Consensus so his Senior year, won many games in the clutch and only played at UK 3 seasons. Carried the team in the '79 season with his consistency to go with Dwight Anderson's erratic speed.

I would have to agree with Macy...not sure how I left him off...I wore #4 and wiped my hands on my socks in Little League. I'll replace Wall with Macy. As far as Wah Wah, I don't totally get that either. I am from his hometown and have met him several times and love that he was a UK and Olympic Champion, but I can't put him in that category.

Years ago if my Dad told me once he told me a thousand times, "Wah - Wah was from Harlan County son, like your old man." (He also talked about Willie McCovey playing minor league ball down there once) FWIW, my Dad was born and lived at Gray's Knob (sp?) till he was 15 and moved to CKY around '54. :thumb:
