April 15, 201016 yr Homer Bailey has top of the rotation stuff, yes. He's still young, and is learning as we go. I forgot how impatient Reds fans can be. Going on 4th season exposed to the biggs now. Didn't think it was that unreasonable for him to have 3 solid pitches now. Hopefully, you are right and he does hone them here soon like Grienke did.

I still wish he wasn't such an emotional pitcher; or, if he's going to be an emotional pitcher, I wish the Reds would have Mario teach Bailey his secret of channeling his hotheadedness.

Hopefully, you are right and he does hone them here soon like Grienke did. Like I said before, part of the problem is that Homer has TOO MANY PITCHES. He has good enough stuff to get by with a fastball, changeup, splitter & occasional curve / slider. When he's able to get those 3 (or 4) over consistently, he can begin mixing in the other stuff. It doesn't matter what you're throwing or how nasty your stuff is if you can't throw it for strikes.

He pitched 45+ innings. In '08, Homer started 8 games. He went 0-6 with a 7.93 ERA in 36 innings. In '09, Homer started 20 games. He went 8-5 with a 4.53 ERA. He threw 113 innings. Including this year, Homer has 205 innings pitched in his entire MLB CAREER. To put that in perspective... Bronson threw 220 innings last year, and has thrown more innings than Bailey has (for his career) every year since 2005. Zack Greinke, who people (for some reason) keep comparing Homer to, threw 652 innings before he had a breakout year last year. That does not include the '06 season, when Greinke appeared in only 3 games (all in relief) and pitched 6 innings.

I don't know when, or if, Homer will have a breakout year. Honestly, I was not all that disappointed with the year he had last year. It was full of ups & downs, but he finished strong. I still have hope that Homer will put it all together this year. He has solid mechanics & a live arm. Just because he was "the next best thing" coming out of high school does not mean that he's overhyped. Think of it this way. Homer Bailey only needed two pitches on the high school level. A 90+ mph fastball & a changeup. He was able to just throw (as opposed to pitch) and he was unhittable. He knew this, and likely thought he was better than he truly was...which is why you hear some rumblings about an attitude problem, him being uncoachable, etc. Now, he is in professional baseball and realizes that you can't just throw the ball past hitters. He has developed a solid splitter, but is still learning how to truly pitch. Give it time. He's a top of the rotation guy.

April 16, 201016 yr The Reds simply have to rethink their hitting philosophy. They have struck out 14 more times tonight. You have to put the ball in play more often.
