How do the Cov. Cath. faithful see the o line and d line stacking up this year and the size of each boy?

We can add Ohio U and Ball State to the list of offers for Troy.

For the most part, the reason for the lack of a short passing game last year was not the scheme or the players. If you watch the films they did have receivers open across the middle or on intermediate routes most of the time. A big part of the reason they didn't utilize this more had to do with Erpenbecks preference for 1-the long ball 2-to run. Also, their 2 big name receivers both played mainly on the outside (Connelly & Robinson) and they are not the type of receivers to come across the middle but are better at working the sidelines and down the field. Part of the problem, and the benefit of the offense they run is there are so many options it is tough for a kid to grasp in just one year. I think if you have a QB that is not as prolific a runner as Erpenbeck you will see more short passes.

 

Another reason may have been that some coaches prefer not to throw across the middle. Too many defenders and thus a greater possibility of the qb not seeing one or the ball being tipped, resulting in an interception. Passes to the outside are more likely to either be caught or incomplete. Don't know if Wirth falls into that category of coaches or not.

Any updates on CovCath after one week of practice. Suprises, disappointments, highlights, lowlights?

I would say the play of the Qb's has been a pleasant surprise. Bir seems to be bigger and stronger than last year. He throws a very nice ball, and seems to be gaining in confidence each outing. Reece while not as aesthetically pleasing to watch throw is very effecient running the offense. Reece has also looked very good as a WR when he has been in there. He is very quick, he would be the best running threat of the QB's.

 

It will be interesting to see which direction CovCath takes this year, pure passer or combination runner and thrower.

 

With the RB's that they have the need for the QB to pull it down and run may not be as great as it was last year.

Just wondering but have the Middle School CovCath Colonels 8th and 7th grade teams, been invited to play in the Bluegrass Bowl? Talk about a huge crowd at LexCath if the 8th & 7th Grade Teams played at LexCath prior to the CovCath vs. LexCath game!

 

The pregame tailgate party across the street, would indeed be huge!

 

I think it would be a great idea for the middle school teams to play either before or after the varsity on a Saturday afternoon. It'd be pretty exciting for the little guys. I'm not trying to turn this into a middle school thread or anything, but does anyone know who what their schedule might look like?

Not having one QB be able to win the job is not good. It is still very early so this is all part of the decision process for the coaches. IMO it is always better to pick one QB and go with him. Leadership is so important from your QB that the coach needs to make a decision. I will be surprised if you see both players regularly playing in the heat of the game throughout the season and I think it hurts more than it helps if that is the way it works out.

Actually in the recent past I would argue that it's been the opposite. '03-'04 they had Calihan and Ellison. '05-'06 they had Ellison and Blesser. In 2007 Four different QB's got legitimate varsity playing time. In 2008 Young and Isler were probably just as good as one another.

Trust me, I couldn't agree more. However, I've spoken with several people involved in the program in some way or another who I have pretty good reason to believe, and it definitely isn't the first time I've heard talk of two quarterbacks. :idunno:

Callahan was never the quarterback in 2004. He had been moved to WR at that point. I don't recall him ever taking snaps at qb in practice in 2004. It was Ellison's job from the get-go and no health issues were involved.
