I think although Beechwood will improve on things this season, their program has returned somewhat to their form from the late 80's and early 90's, when they were a VERY tough, top-notch single-A football program without the size or depth they need to overcome Cov Cath. I don't say that to knock Beechwood - not whatsoever - but I will honestly be very surprised if Beechwood wins this year, and I'll give them all the credit in the world if they do.

I may be wrong, but at least that's my thinking on things. :idunno:

Size may be an issue for Beechwood against CCH. It was clearly the difference in the game last year. However, depth will not be a problem for Beechwood this coming season. Depth is going to be one of their strengths this year. They have a lot of quality players. CCH is clearly the favorite but it will be a more competitive game this year.

I glad to hear that about the Tigers. How big do you figure their roster to be this year? If I'm not mistaken, they were in the 40's last year.

Roster size won't be much different. It is the quality of the players on the roster. For example, I think there is a good chance Beechwood will play platoon football this year. We won't know till they hit the field but they have enough quality players to strongly consider it. That should help with the size issue on the line when the linemen are only playing one way.

We will see, CCH is turning the corner, but I really enjoy my screensaver scoreboard from last years game.

I figured cincy217's comment would get this thread humming soon enough. :D

In order for it to be a battle, CovCath is either going to have improved SIGNIFICANTLY or Highlands is going to have dropped off SIGNIFICANTLY from last year. Game wasn't near as close as the score board indicated last year. I'll keep my prediction on how close of a battle I think it will be to myself at this time. But I will say to those who had posted that they couldn't wait for the current seniors at Highlands to graduate, I think you are going to be unpleasantly surprised when the Birds take the field this year, and I'll leave it at that.

Or it could be somewhere in between. No one who follows NKY football thinks that Highlands has all of the sudden dropped off significantly. They do feel that the overall talent will be a notch or so below the last two years.

No one thinks that this year's CovCath squad is the reincarnation of the last state title team either. They do think that a 2nd year under a new regime, along with a veteran defensive squad has the potential to be an improved football team.

Add those two things together, sprinkle in the rivalry factor and yes there is optimism that this year's game will be decided in the 4th quarter.

Fair enough. Although you'll have to forgive me if I don't see it being a 4th quarter game. Closer than the last two years? Probably. But we'll see.

As Oscar Wilde put it, "The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about."

With due respect to Simon Kenton and Ryle, it is good to see some Cov. Cath. vs. Highlands head butting. I think most Cov. Cath. fans recognize the recent performance gap between the Birds & Colonels will likely not be bridged in 2010. 7N11????

CovCath will go 5-5 or 6-4 if their lucky. seem to me the defense gave up alot of points last year.

They started 3 sophs at linebacker and 2 on the Dline. Trust me, the defense is going to be very good this year. Coach Naumann and Coach Ray have been working with these kids for two years now. Watch out for Grant Guess at LB, he had a great year last year in first ever season of football, and has added a lot of muscle in the offseason. They return Timmerman, Connaughton, Henderson, Jones, and Sizemore on the D line (All saw signifacant playing time last year), Guess, Coyne-Chailland, and Clark at LB. All three were sophs last year. Throw in Leo at MLB and Soph. D.J. Powell at OLB and you have pretty good depth at LB. Paul Ritter is a stud at Safety and Travis Conner returns at CB.

Wow marely! That's a bit rough for your Colonels. I think they will surprise a few this year. I'm just glad they won't be playing my Birds till the end of the year.

There is going to have to be a complete turn around in CCH's defense. They've given up over 90 points and over 900 yards of offense to Highlands in the last two games. More than a sprinkle will be needed.

I'm a glass half full kind a guy. CovCath showed a big improvement from 2008 game vs the 2009. They cut the scoring by Highlands almost 60%. If they can do the same thing this year. That puts the Bluebirds in the 21 point range. You see it all depends how you look at it.:D

The great thing is that right now everyone is 0-0, and preparing their football team for a Championship run!

One of the great things about HS sports, is that from year to year big things can happen. May not be probable or even logical, but it does happen.
