Quite an impressive run for Shelby Valley, beating four good teams by an average of 17 points. I saw the Wildcats at the All A Classic, and they played much better basketball at the Sweet 16.

 

Justice elevated his game tremendously last week, and he will be a deserving Mr. Basketball.

But I can't really call them a "small" school. Their enrollement is 120th out of 260 or so schools, which means they are larger than 46% of the schools that play basketball.

 

Smaller than Ballard? Yes. Second smallest than every school in the field? Yes.

 

Compared to the Sweet 16 field, they are a small school. Compared to the rest of the state, they aren't small.

Justice gets a lot of credit, and deservedly so, but I think Hatfield is an underrated player. Hes a very versatile player and should get a lot of college attention with his size and the way he shoots.

I understand your point, Scribe, but this is where you can use statistics and create a mirage. SV may be larger than 46% of the schools that play basketball, but they are only SLIGHTLY larger than those schools - as compared to the fact that they are significantly smaller than schools like Ballard.

 

My point being - SV may be larger than 46% of the schools in the state, meaning they fall into the middle of the "Bell Curve" - but they are still undeniably a "small" school with only about 550 kids.

 

Shelby Valley joins Paintsville and Breckinridge County as two of the smaller schools that - in the last 15 years or so - continue to prove that smaller schools can and do compete at the highest levels with the bigs in basketball.

I think when it's all said and done with that Keiston Jones may end up being the best player out of this class! He has only been entirely focused on basketball for three years(played baseball in the summers) and he is a young senior(still 17 I believe) so he has a ton of upside.
