Rockmom I have to say you are wrong here because I fall into that group. While growing up without a father figure leads young men to be more comfortable expressing their feelings around women, nothing takes the place of a good male role model. My mother raised me by herself for my entire life and is one of my best friends, but there are things that me and her cannot talk about, so how would I do that with any other female authority figure?

You and your son have a special bond then. In most cases that is not so though. Like I said, off the field it would be extremely hard for a female coach to succeed. How many female teachers do male students have that kind of bond with?

 

I'm not degrading women's knowledge of the game or ability to motivate, but I think the idea of a female coach is ridiculous as they just cannot provide everything for their players that a male coach can. Say what ever you want, but ask some HS or College football players and see what they say.

I'm not sexist, at all. Girls just have no place in regular football. They cannot play the sport with men (outside of kicking) and that's just a scientific fact. So why should they coach a men's only sport? That would be like me teaching a class on dealing with the female menstruation cycle. I might have all the knowledge in the world about menstruation, but I could never be a great teacher for girls on dealing with it.

A higher level? It may be professional but I don't think it's a high level. Given that there are no training levels of women's football like college teams, I would equate women's professional football to even be below professional cheerleaders. Get mad if you want but it's the truth.

It could, but as we all know coaches play a huge role in their players lives. Football is so time consuming that I feel it helps if the coach is one of the players biggest role models. Would you disagree?

 

I just hate the whole idea. I have nothing against women athletes or coaches, but start HS girls football and major college girls football. Until then football is a man's game. I wouldn't want my team to have a female coach or female players (I always hate this in HS FB). I'm all for equality of genders, but it's not a question of being equal or discrimination. Women cannot play with the men (physically, what a joke), so how are they suppose to coach men? Women's football is nothing like how men play, even greater in disparity than Women & Men's BBall. I don't like the fact that men coach college women's BBall, but that has been around forever I'd imagine and I feel some women could cross over and do very well in the Men's game (Pat Summit can outcoach 99% of the people on this planet). So until this coach (or another female coach) proves that she is capable of being a good leader on the field I'm just not going to believe it.

I understand what you are saying and don't necessarily disagree. But you are saying that you are okay with the school hiring her to coach, correct? Because if she never gets hired, how can she prove herself to be a good leader on the field?

People can hire who ever they want it's none of my business. It may turn out for them and it is possible that she was the most qualified person that applied. I just cannot buy a woman HC in football though and if I had the choice would most likely never hire one.

I should clarify that my biggest problem with this whole circumstance is "girls can play football too", that is too commonly heard. I got on one of the women's League's websites and there was all kinds of stuff like that. Can they? Sure, against other girls in an All Girls league. But against males? There's not a woman alive who I think would survive (physically bruised and hurt not literally dead obviously) a high level HS football game. But when girls come out for football, coaches always take it easy on them which is wrong. If a girl wants to play football for the HS team they should be required to actually play football.

Sexism or just reality? How many women have ever been a HC in football? How many women have been offered a scholarship to play football at a D1 school (non-kickers)? I don't think it's just KY that feels this way. Let's see Texas, Florida, Ohio or California hire a female coach or two for their HS teams.

I'm sorry, I'm not sexist at all but there is no place for a woman Head Coach in Football IMO. It's a man's game and women just cannot relate to male players the same way that a man can. If there was a gender specific sport for women I wouldn't want a male to coach it either.

 

It's not about the knowledge of the game, women can have just as much as men in that department, it's all the off the field stuff. The locker room as a whole is not a place for a woman (especially an adult woman). The life lessons and bonding that take place on a football team are just not something that would go as well between teenage boys and an adult female coach.

 

To any female that thinks this would be a good idea, ask your local high school coach if you can sit in on the workouts and spring practice. Be in the lockerroom before and after practice. Listen to the conversations. There are things about men that women will and can never understand and vice-versa. Women would be as out of place as a football coach as a 10 year old boy would be at a girl scout meeting. JMO, I'm not sexist at all but I think people should be realistic.
