First ever female high school head football coach

Featured Replies

Good luck, by the way, playing without pads against a women's team. When it's all scheduled, let me know. I want to watch. :D

Count me in for that, too, RM! :p

How do you know that women can't compete as football coaches? It's never been done? You can't say something can't be done if it's never been tried!

In your opinion , why has it taken this long for this to happen ? High school football has been around for a long time.

Old habits are hard to break?!:sssh::D

Cats,

I am trying hard to understand your point (and the points of the others against a woman coach), but when several facts are presented, the objections don't outweigh them.

You don't want to turn this into a woman's rights issue, but the fact that there are people who don't think a woman, albeit rare, should be a head coach of a football team pretty much pushes it to that level. There's no job in the country that should be granted based upon the gender of an individual, if the individuals in question are equally as qualified for the job, and one presents him/herself as meeting the criteria set forth in the hiring process.

I can't buy any argument by anyone on anything that includes "it's a man's job", if it's never been tried by a woman. Even if Coach Rudolph isn't successful, I don't think that should be the gauge for the next woman that comes along looking to be hired as a head football coach.

I simply can't buy any argument that is based on gender.

I don't think ANY woman can do it, just as I don't think ANY man can do it.

But, I think the right PERSON should have the opportunity, whether male of female, to achieve their goals, and that they should be judged on the merits of their performance, without regard to their gender.

If she isn't successful, I doubt it has anything to do with being female, and everything to do with learning.

I agree with alot of your points. My argument is not that women are not physically or mentally capable of doing it. Maybe I should have worded it better. But we all know a woman would face serious challenges (more than any man would face) as a head coach of a HS football team. It's just the way the world works and the way football has worked.

I think that alot of people were taking what I was saying the wrong way, I just do not think a woman has a high chance of succeeding as they will have a shorter leash than a man would among other things. Her not being successful would be linked to alot of external factors IMO that stem from her being a woman.

Does the fact that it takes a different level to be a wide receiver than to be a linebacker mean that a wide receiver will be a better coach than a linebacker?

Whether you feel the "level" of football is the same in playing the game is irrelevant to the issue of coaching. I know of NO head coach that's played EVERY position in football. There are male coaches who've NEVER played football, or were 2nd or 3rd stringers, for the love of Pete!

I see your point in the first two paragraphs, but you missed what I was saying. It's not the knowledge, women can get that. What they can't get is the experience of two-a-days in the heat, and the "manly" vibe football teams have. I don't see how you can deny that. When the football team is together, guys are different than they are at any other time it's just how it is. And I think that is a key part of being a good coach, you have to understand that. I do not know how it feels to be a woman, and I don't expect any female to know how it is to be a man.

As for the game you probably have more connections than me so I'll let you schedule my butt-kicking:D. I just said I would do it, didn't say I would win.:thumb:

If the Coolage team, administration, parents and community are happy with their choice of head coach, then it doesn't matter .

It seems that some people forget that for a long time blacks (and other minorities) were inferior as players and coaches as well until some of them finally made it to the 'real professional' teams. Just because it is something that people are not used to does not mean this lady can not coach football or mentor young men.

The worst she can do is lose every game, something quite a fey male coaches do every year, and some of them even manage to keep their jobs for years to come without winning a game or very few games.

Some of you are living in a fantasy world. You need to drop your silly PC nonesense and face reality. You have swallowed liberal propaganda hook line and sinker. I swore to myself that I would never come back to this tread because the depth of the brainwashing was more than I could stand. As a common sense American I am ashamed it has come to this.

I'm afraid you're lost in a bygone era, that has long sense been erased by logic and reason. I think the rest of us are a little, not ashamed, but disappointed to see that such attitudes still exist out there in modern society.

You should be ashamed of yourself. You can't even think for yourself. You and others like you are victims and I truly feel sorry for you. Thats the facts whether you beleive it or not.

7thcorps, I'm sorry, but you are wrong.

I do think for myself. I'm just not lead around by the hand of Rush Limbaugh.

As Rockmom said, I'm sorry you have such ideas. Nuff said.

Again, it doesn't matter what any of us think as long as the team, parents, administration , and community of Coolage High are happy with their decision.

I do believe this is the best point on the thread. While I do believe it will be hard for the Coach in many ways, as long as the school, players and community are happy with the hire no one can really complain that much.

The only thing that bothers me is the "You go, girl" attitude of some of the commenters. Blatant sexism. Obviously, few women have the experience to coach football. This woman looks like she might and as stated above, if the team, parents, etc are happy, then great. If it's a PC thing, then not so great.

I'm a near 40 year fan of Pat Summit of Tennessee and have met her many times. She could coach men as well as any man coaches women or men.

If any of us are victims (especially the ladies), it is because of you and others like you that still believe things such as this are true. Just because you and others feel this way does not mean the rest of can not think for ourselves. Not giving an opportunity to a woman based on the fact that she is a woman is not thinking for yoursefl, it is following the party line.

The worst she can do is not any worse than some of the male coaches out there.
