Bylaw 6 of the KHSAA handbook does allow a student-athlete to transfer schools without sitting out a year if there is a change of residence, a divorce or change of custody among other exceptions. It does not allow a transfer strictly for athletic purposes.

 

 

Boyle’s filings to the KHSAA state Dunn went from living with his mother, Regina Kavanaugh, who lives in the Danville school district, to living with his father Wilber Dunn, who lives in Boyle’s district. Even though the couple were never married, Dunn’s transfer still falls under the divorced parents exception.

 

 

He met criteria to transfer, the text, and the persistence from the Danville camp is what led the KHSAA to over rule the transfer labeling for athletics only.

 

Much has been said about the text and that it had to brought to the attention of KHSAA. I just wonder if all texts or conversations from 16 year old kids are brought to the attention of officials be it the officials of the school or law enforcement agency. I asked this question earlier about how much a text from a teen holds up in a court of law. I think it held some, but the Danville camp with there letters to the KHSAA and all of that was enough at the end of the day.

Is there anyone who doubts that Dunn transferred for athletic reasons? All this semantics and posturing is a sign of the times - twist the rules to try and get what you want. If you believe Dunn is transferring for a reason other than athletics, then make your points. Otherwise, it is hypocritical to argue for a kid who is trying to get around the state rules. And all because of some far fetched idea that this move will help get a scholarship? There is no way going to Boyle County will have any impact on whether Dunn gets a scholarship. I just think this whole situation is very sad for a lot reasons.

Whether true or not I haven't seen it, there was mention of Dunn making some questionable comments in the BCHS newspaper that sounded like he made the move for sports purposes? This also if true would affect things? It just appears on the outside looking in, Dunn made some moves and comments, which left not made would not have jeopardized his transfer. When this first came out I made the statement, "I hoped Dunn's family researched this situation well, and covered all the bases before they pulled the trigger."

I think you are right on Voice of Reason. Though in my opinion, it looks like the family felt it would increase his scholarship chances and probably in reality wouldn't have.

There is more to why he transferred, but again, I am in the camp that 99% of all transfers are for athletic reasons when concerning athletes anyways.

If Will Dunn was not Danville's best player transferring to Boyle County there wouldn't even be a thread about it. I still think in the end that he will be ruled eligible once the appeals process is over..... just like Chad Jackson and Dakotah Euton. In fact, Will being initially ruled ineligible is not a huge surprise to anyone in the Boyle County camp.

 

As for the far fetched idea about him switching schools for a scholarship, all that is speculation. When discussed with those close to the situation, no one mentioned anything about going to Boyle County to attain a scholarship so we may as well just throw that one out.

 

IMO, there are deep rooted reasons for the transfer and sometimes some people just aren't meant to be around one another and separation is sometimes the best remedy for everyone involved.

I haven't seen that either but I heard about it like you have. I haven't seen the school paper in a while, but I usually see it when it comes. If I stumble across it I'll let you know.

 

I do believe that they were told that he had to have his transfer paperwork in by a certain date in January(I can't remember the date) if he was going to be eligible for football and that deadline date created the mad rush and overnight transfer.

Agreed ... when a situation gets to this point, there are a lot adults that need to do some reflection.
