The key to tapping even a small amount of talent in Cincinnati on a regular basis is someone directly tied to the football community in the city. Who is that person on the UK staff? Who does he expect to fill that role???

This is the whole key, and UK has never had that type of guy on their staff.

 

UK should have made inroads into the Cincinnati market many years ago. It is a natural.....it's an hour and a half drive and it's an opportunity to play in the SEC. Those are the two basic points to sell.

 

"Gametime" is right. UK will never control the Cincinnati market. I see the Queen City as always being divided territory for many schools. Heck, if UC could "own" Cincinnati, they would have been a consistant powerhouse.

Is that really the case any more? Maybe when ND had its own TV network. There are a 100 games on every week, I find it hard to believe that they choose to watch those that you listed over a game that is better in another conference.

And that's my point. Saying it and doing it in terms of what it takes to have an impact in Cincinnati are two different things. Simply being down the road, and having a large alumni base across the "moat" aren't going to make that happen. I like what Joker has done so far in the hires he has made, but none of them at this point are going to do anything other than put his foot in his mouth over this comment...

 

Don't you think you're taking Joker a little too seriously? All coaches, even your beloved Coach Jones are going to make comments like that at some point in time. If Joker, or any other coach that was going to try to recruit Cincy (or any other area) and didn't have a goal of making it one of "their" areas, I wouldn't want them to be in charge of my schools recruiting. No doubt. He knows he is going to come in and swoop up every recruit in the area that he wants. He's been around long enough and knows that's how it works.

As "Gametime" has pointed out, UK was able to get Alex Smith because of his family's extensive Kentucky background. Alex Smith had told Coach Phillips that he dreamed of playing for Kentucky growing up, and Coach Phillips challenged him to live his dream like he was doing.

 

I think getting a top kid out of Cincinnati has Joker wanting more. He should want more and with the logistics, I say, he should get more, but Kentucky has done an extremely poor job laying any foundation to recruit southwestern Ohio in the past.

 

There will be more staff changes for UK football next season (Coach Ortmeyer and maybe Coach Brown), and Coach Phillips is savy enough to look to get a coach with extensive ties to southwestern Ohio recruiting.
