Joker Phillips on recruiting: "We've got to own Cincinnati"

Phillips interview: Joker touches on past, present, future in Lexington

CBS: Did former Cincinnati coach Brian Kelly kind of make that a destination recruiting spot?

Phillips: Yes, he did. But we kind of gave up -- I shouldn't say gave up -- we kind of eased up on Cincinnati. It's an hour from us. It's a big huge alumni area for us. We've got to own Cincinnati."

It's not going to happen.....Cincy will continue to be open for all....UK could never shut it down.

I agree. Most Cincy kids have dreams of playing for Ohio State/Big Ten/Notre Dame/UC/Boston College. It would be nice for UK to pull two or three recruits a year out of the Queen City though.

At my expense or Joker's?

Joker. There are way too many hands in the cookie jar for UK to ever be any kind of force in Cincinnati as you pointed out. If he really wants to focus on a major metro area where the kids seem to be more up for grabs, Indy would be a much better target IMO...

First time I've seen the word goon used as a compliment.

I like the attitude. I don't think Joker thinks they have a shot at "owning" Cincinnati, especially with OSU so close. There's no reason UK can't make a splash though. He is all about recruiting, I like it.

OSU doesn't "own" Cincinnati. Never has, and never will. Sure they do get some of the bigger name recruits from in the city up there, but it is NOTHING like how the rest of the state views OSU. To make that statement after this recruiting class is actually quite hilarious. In maybe the best class in the city in over a decade in terms of high major talent they landed one kid. There are post signing day articles and blogs on the issue from Columbus every year...

Where did I say that OSU owned the city? They are the 'biggest' player around though.

This is just one year but look at the Cincy recruits this season. Hicks to Texas, James to ND, Brown to UL, Collinsworth to ND, Smith to UK, Simpson to UK and plenty of others to boot that didn't land in CBus. I would venture to guess that Posey is the last big time recruit from this area to head north.

Easy big guy.....:D

OSU is far from the biggest "player" in the city. They will have a year here and there where they do better than usual, but on a regular basis they simply can't pull much from the city because the love for OSU isn't near the level it is in the rest of the state. What else would you have been trying to say by singling out OSU in that post???

Exactly. They landed a very good OL prospect in Norwell this year, but missed on several other major targets...
