Pearl a Better Game Coach than Cal?

Featured Replies

I love all the love Tubby gets from non-UK fans. I can't help but wonder why.

Honestly, I like Tubby the same way I like Cal. I am not a UK fan, but I can respect and like UK coaches as well as some of the players(Mashburn, Wall, Cousins, Rondo). That doesn't stop me from enjoying UK losses.

Put me in the group that doesn't think Tubby is that bad of a coach and that all coaches go through lulls in their time.

If Duke acted the way UK did, this would be Coach K's last year.........

Tubby is way too classy for that.......

I agree.

Because Pearl, out of necessity, slows the ball down and milks the clock and plays UK to an 11 point loss, he's a better "in-game coach" than Calipari. Give me a break! :ohbrother:

A first year high school coach could have figured out that game plan.

It's not simply this season, Prof.

He went to Memphis a couple of seasons ago and beat the #1 Tigers in FedEx. The next season, Calipari returned the favor by a bucket in Knoxville.

I don't think either are good "in-game" coaches. I think Calipari is the better recruiter (obviously) and maybe the better motivator of his team. He also is better with egos and handles chaos better.

Pearl does a better job in pregame preparations and can motivate the "underdog" better.

Tubby won one championship with what a lot of people feel were Rick's players. I don't feel that way personally, but outside of that, the man has a very limited resume. Coach K is one of, if not the, greatest college basketball coaches of all time. I wouldn't put the two in the same sentence together, but that's just me. To each his own.

Back to the thread topic.

Both are good coaches. Very similar winning percentages, but Cal has the two Final Four's. What barometer do you use to measure a better "in game" coach? Isn't the ultimate measurement a win? What else matters?

Pearl-Currently ranked #4 among active coaches with a winning % of .774. Record of 415-121. 17 years of coaching.

Cal-Currently ranked #6 among active coaches with a winning % of .760. Record of

441-139. 17 years of coaching.

Cal is also ranked fourth all time in 30+ win seasons with 6.

Here is some irony for you...Tubby Smith currently has 441 wins also (441-174 in 19 seasons).

To follow up on other comments in the thread, I am a big UK fan and I love Tubby. And on this topic, I think he is one of the best in game coaches in college basketball. He always seemed to have the game and matchups sized up at the 10 minute to go mark. From there, he made all the right moves in strategy and personnel. Obviously, he left something to be desired in recruiting and I do think he wore down his last two years. But I think he is a great coach. However, in today's college basketball if you want to win national titles, I will take the best recruiting coach all day long. Talent wins titles.

I didn't put them in the same sentence, you did. I put Duke and UK in the same sentence.:p

I'm not sure what you mean by that statement. Could you elaborate for me?

Tubby was more or less ran out of this state. A majority of UK fans clamored for him to leave for at least a year before he officially flew out of the state. The man couldn't even host call in shows without people calling in and telling him to leave. Last I saw he was still making the tournament and going to the Sweet 16, give or take an early round exit or two.....much like how Duke has been since 2004. The man has been gone going on 3 years, yet he is still getting hammered by UK fans. Need I say more?

Thus the statement......"If Duke acted the way UK did, this would be Coach K's last year......... "

I guess it should read...."If a majority Duke fans acted the way a majority UK fans did, this would be Coach K's last year........."

Meaning....Duke's tourney success since 2004 is comparable to Tubby's ever since Dwyane Wade had his coming out party in the Elite 8. If Duke fans acted the way UK fans did, Coach K would get ran out after this year.

Good points, but who is better in dealing with parole officers or quicker to post bail. They both should have a lot of experience with this during their times coaching in the volunteer state.

I agree 100% on all points.:thumb:

Plus, has anyone else noticed that he never seems to get on the officials? I can't remember one time all year where he really got after an official.

My count is 3 times so far tonight, including screaming at an official across the court about Cousins' 2nd foul.

He has been on them tonight. I think he has a legit complaint at the end of the half. Thanks for noticing.

No problem. That's what I am here for.:thumb:

And yes, I think he has a legit complaint also.
