October 6, 200521 yr I think Prop #1 is the absolute worst proposal there is because it places limitations on all of the independent schools. Just horrible... If they want to make it 20 miles it needs to be 20 miles (or the same) for everyone. The fact that this is being proposed by a public school that has open enrollement doesn't pass the smell test. If Eastern was limited to a geographical area, like many independents will be under this proposal, I guarantee you it would be written different. Again, Prop #1 is no solution at all. I know some schools have reciprocal agreements but if you take my case for example Prop #1 is the enemy. Here is how it would work for me: I live in Florence, if I want to send my child to Beechwood (I went to Beechwood) he has to sit out a year. However, if I want to send my kid to Covington Catholic I could do so with no strings attached under Prop 1. If Prop 1 passes the real losers will be schools like Beechwood and Highlands and not the private schools. In fact, it could make the private schools even better (see example above). Pigskin has the best solution in my opinion. Prop #1 could be amended to the following and I think it would work well: In order to make things as equal as possible, how about a simple rule that says any student who lives within 20 miles of any high school, public or private is eligible to play without setting out a year. A school's BOE would of course be permitted to decrease that range if it so decides. Simple, all treated the same unless that school's BOE wanted to restrict who could enroll. Of course kids who live within the 20 mile range but outside the school's boundaries would be out of district students and would have to pay tuition but would be eligible to play without sitting out a year. If the 20 mile rule is fair to the privates, it should be fair to the publics.
October 6, 200521 yr It has not been fair to the other schools in the 11th region that they have to compete against a school that is made up of some of the best players from a 5-6 counties surrounding Fayette County. How will this address that because as I visualize a map of Fayette County, a 20 mile radius from LexCath still covers a pretty good portion of the surrounding counties.

October 7, 200521 yr It seems it's pretty obvious this 20 mile radius is directed at Jefferson County. Very little change for NKY and Lex... Also very little change for Jefferson County. I think that Prop 1 will punish a very few kids, do little to fix the perceived problems and generate a lawsuit from kids that are outside the limit. Other than that it sounds good.
October 7, 200521 yr I think they should come up with a proposition that only bans the tranfer of exceptional athletes.
October 7, 200521 yr I think they should come up with a proposition that only bans the tranfer of exceptional athletes. It's just not transfers but entering the freshmen year of HS. No transfer there.
October 7, 200521 yr There must be something to it. If it was all wrong and stupid then the private schools have a position of strength. Why even deal with it. Does anyone listen to what is being said. To all the private school posters. ONE OF YOUR OWN board appointments - Bob Schneider of NCC made it very clear "There is a problem and I thought this was being addressed but the effort is now really organized". If this was just a waste of time and/or just whining, can anyone on this board who knows Coach Schneider to any degree suggest he would not say as much and quite loud?

SilverShadow, I respect you greatly. But, if you think any one of the proposals on the table are going to "level the playing field" you're going to be in for a rude awakening. The powers will shift in some sports, and remain the same in others. But, there will be no "level playing field".
October 7, 200521 yr Some of the feeder parochial schools into LexCath are more than 20 miles away. These parishes pay a subsidy for their children to attend high school in Lexington. The Catholic population is far more scattered in central KY than it is in Northern KY or Jefferson county.

Just a note: All Catholic grade school parishes pay a subsidy to the corresponding Catholic high school.

If this was just a waste of time and/or just whining, can anyone on this board who knows Coach Schneider to any degree suggest he would not say as much and quite loud? Define "problem". I'd say there is a "problem" if there are 20 proposals brought forth to the voting body. Doesn't matter if they have no merit or all the merit in the world. That's a "problem" if schools feel (rightly or wrongly) that proposals are needed. Especially considering that two years ago a related proposal did not receive the necessary majority and now there this year there are several proposals similar after nothing last year. I'd say that is a "problem". After the proposal two years ago I think the emphais was, for lack of a better phrase, placed on "we have rules on the books so report and we will investigate all" to take care of "problems". That must not be a solution for some so hence there are proposals to address the "problems."
October 7, 200521 yr Obviously, as Schneider said, there is a "problem". However, that "problem" has nothing to do with the overused, insincere, and silly slogan of the publics to "level the playing field" (whatever that means). The problem is that the privates win too many championships and the publics, rather than working harder to succeed, whine about all of these imagined "advantages" that all of these little privates hold over the heads of the impotent publics. Of course, in present day America, it is much easier to whine for "concessions" than to produce a better product.

I know there are a lot of private schools that aren't happy with the public schools but for you to call all of us impotent is a bit much. Also, what are you holding over our heads? :irked:  The choice of words just usually isn't use in this instance. However, I agree with you. Accept the impotence part.
