7th grade middle school State tournament Feb.5-7

Holmes lost to AB Combs by 2 as far as not shooting well Friday they won by 25 points so someone had to be hitting some shots by the margin of victory Saturday is when they shot poorly and lost.
When I saw them play on Friday night they were shooting layups. The team they were playing could simply not handle the full court pressure that Holmes was supplying and was turning the ball over. I saw AB Combs play early in the day on Saturday and they only had 6 players. I'm surprised they were able to stay with Holmes. I'm guessing they played a 2-3zone against the Bulldogs.

Wayne County wins the Championship over Knox.

Congrats Wayne County!

I would love to see Wayne County and Ockerman play.

I would too.

Guru, next year we are wanting to travel to NKY and play some teams on a long weekend, maybe you could help set that up.

I thought there was 4 or 5 teams that were way above the rest in this tourney.

In my opinion Ockerman would have been in the 5-8 category with teams that were there. I don't think they could have played with any of the final 4, but we will never know. Stanley would have probably been the best player in the tournament, hate he didn't get to play. Maybe next year Ockerman will come.

I'm not too familiar with NKY Middle School Basketball.

How good are Holmes and Ockerman and who are their key players?

I'm a parent on the Ockerman team and we were in Lexington. We were not allowed to play due to the weather in Boone County, does not make too much sense to me. We even went over to KBA to watch some games on Friday night. It was a very disappointing trip. The boys were there and ready to play but we were not allowed. I do also believe there was a wrestling tournament going on and Ryle was not allowed to participate in it also. So I am not sure how Connor was able to play unless they went against the Superintendent. I do think we would have played on Sunday and from then on it was up in the air. There were some very good looking teams. Hopefully next year we will have a chance again.

Great tournament this weekend. Wayne county is state champs for a reason. They are very good and very experienced. They went through 3 of the best teams in the state in route to the title (Southern, Vergie, and Knox). Last year Wayne Co. was undefeated. This year Wayne has only lost to two teams (Southern twice and Knox once) and they avenged those losses Sunday. Congratulations to Wayne County, you are well deserving of the title STATE CHAMPS.

Holmes after the state tourney are now 24-2 their key players are Markel McClendon, James Bolden, Kenneth Poetter and Jason Covington. AB Combs height advantage was the difference in the game which caused some problems but the final score of that game was 38-36. Their other loss came in a regular season loss to Ockerman

FYI, Combs lost by 30 to South Laurel. South was another team capable of winning it as was Virgie, Clay County, and Southern.

And to further put things into perspective Ockerman was beating Holmes 37 to 10 after three quarters when Ockerman put in their bottom five against Holmes first team. My point is Ockerman would have beat Holmes by 30 plus had they not called off the Dogs (LOL) so just maybe Ockerman would be a little better than 5 to 8 but we will never know.

Again, congrats Wayne County!

Congrats to Wayne County:thumb:, but those that have seen Ockerman play in this area know that they are a very good team and would have represented the area well. Stanley can flat out play and IMO this is the best team in the area and would have made a very nice showing in the tourney. I hope that this draws attention to a lame rule that at least needs to be readdressed. Two schools in the same county system making different decisions is an ugh-oh:scared: The boys were down there and should have played and I hope it is addressed before some of the other suggestions in this thread happens (Sweet 16, Disneyworld)....

This Ockerman discussion is getting really old. They didn't show up to play, regardless of the reason why. Wayne County won the tournament with Knox second. That's the only thing that matters about the KBA State. Everything else is rhetoric.

I wish I would have got to see Wayne play. They were on the other side of our bracket so I never got to see them play. My kids gave a great effort, we were in foul trouble the whole game versus Knox. We lead by 4 at the half and got beat by I think 4 or 5 in the end.

Are you sure?

I only say that because after our game with them, shook the coaches hand and made a comment about the Highlands game. He replied, "Next time we play them, we will get them then."

I assumed from that comment, Highlands had beaten them once.
