Rules you would like to see changed for 2010....or in several more years.

Featured Replies

Here are a few of mine that I would like to see changed: (Please keep the shot clock out of it - that is beating a dead horse!!!)

1) Free Throws: Once again, allow players to move on the release of the ball from the shooter. Get rid of waiting until the ball hits the rim.

They have already cleaned up play by moving everyone up a spot and eliminating 1 or 2 players on the line.

2) Get rid of alternate possession rule. It penalizes the defense. I like the old fashion jump ball.

3) Referees: There is no 1/2 circle under the basket (like in the NBA). So a charge is a charge no matter where it is on the court. Stop implementing rules at other levels into high school basketball.

4) If a player is falling out of bounds, they should not be granted a timeout. I think that both feet need to be on the playing floor for the timeout to be granted.

5) Don't get me wrong, I love the district and regional tournaments......but would anyone like to see the top 64 teams based on the Cantrell and Lickinghouse ratings make it to the tournament (like NCAA)? This would help the schools that are in extremely tough districts and regions, plus there would be less pressure on the KHSAA when they have to realign districts and regions every couple years. This would be simuliar to how Ohio determins their football playoffs.

I have mixed feeling about # 5, but what are everyone else’s thoughts?

I'm with you on the FT issue and the AP.

Obviously the rule is already in place regarding a charge being a charge regardless of where it happens.

I disagree on the feet being on the ground before a TO. If a player has control he has control and therefore should be able to call a TO.

1. Agreed.

2. Agreed.

3. In last night's Mason County-Ashland game, the Tomcats incurred team foul #7 on a player control (charge) foul. No one-and-one, just possession. Mot sure if I like this or not.

4. Don't agree that both feet need to be on the floor (it's rare that the player with the ball has both feet on the floor unless he stops moving completely). Ball control should be enough to be granted the TO.

5. Absolutely not.

Thirty-five second shot clock.

Where are the cantrell ratings posted?

1. I agree on the free throw, when the ball goes up, let them battle, although I have not seen a lane violation all year.

2. I love the alternating possession. I'm 5'-7", but I played much bigger than that, ha. Now who am I going to get the tip against? With the alternating possession, I get 50% of them, a much better percentage. Plus, if I'm on defense and I can force a jump ball, I also force the offense to take the ball out of bounds again and setup the defense. If that happens right before a basket was going to be scored, I have changed the game. I also love when someone forces the offense into a jump ball right before the end of a quarter because now my team gets the first posession coming out of the long time out. All of these rewards the defense. The only way I would like to see this go back to the old way would be if the coach gets to pick who jumps to give the team with little guys a chance.

3. Put the half circle in under the basket. I like the rule.

4. As far as falling out of bounds and calling a time out, do not change the rule. When I have the ball falling out of bounds the clock is ticking time could run out but I can shoot, a foul can be called, I can pass the ball, I can turn the ball over and I can shoot the ball. All facets of basketball continue while I am flying through the air out of bounds, why take one very important part of the game away and not allow me to call a time out?

5. I've been to the Sweet 16 quite a number of times and every time I do I am proud of our format and pray that they never change it. I mean one champ for all classess. The finals is the most impressive High School event I have ever been to. To the KHSAA, please don't change a thing.

You're no. 4 is the one ruling that to me is horrible. I agree with you in that both feet should be on the playing floor to call a time out.

I agree with the FT rule 100%.

AP actually rewards a short team on defense, that would never get a ball using the old-fashioned jump ball. Keep it in.

I also like the current tournament system. Everyone gets in at the district and tournament level. If you're in a tough district/region, well, that's just life. It could happen to anyone.

I hate that the Coach can call time out from the bench and bail out players who have gotten into trouble because of good defense such as 5 second calls or loose ball situations. Leave the game in the hands of the kids and let them decide the outcome. I've seen coaches tell refs to call time out after made free throws and such. The coach should be teaching the game to kids to learn basketball situations and when they should call timeouts. The coach is in control and not players. The PLAYERS should learn game and to look to coach for timeouts instruction and have to call for them.

It always cracks me up how people wax poetic about the good ol' jump ball days. I'm nearly 30 years old and I never remember this being a rule. Does anyone know when this rule was removed?

1-4:thumb:!

5) I would like to see basketball divided up into 2 classes. Then the final 8 of each class go to Rupp for the Sweet Sixteen. Sat. you would have 2 state championship games!

I think the shot clock would be a great idea. Make it say a 40 second shot clock that gives teams plenty of time to run an offense, but prevents stalling. That is the big rule I'd like to see put in.

Since this is all stuff we'd like to see and will not happen Im going to have fun with it.

1) Shot behind half court counts as 5pts

2) Get rid of the 3 seconds in the lane call

3) Once a team has 12 team fouls in a half the opponet gets 2 FT plus 1. 2 plus bonus.

4) Palming the ball while dribbling or crossing over is called!!!!! EVERYTIME!!!

5) Bank shots must be called outside the paint. If not called its considered no good!

Changing the State tourney would be bad for the state. I like it the way it is, it makes the Sweet 16 more special IMO. Tough region or not, you have to win to keep playing. I see no reason to expand. Win your district and region!

That's pretty much the job of the coach. To, you know, manage the game.
