I would like to see referees stop enabling high school players to emulate the bad habits they see in the NBA. Most notably, the jump-stop.

I would love to see referees start penalizing boorish behavior from coaches and players. Too many coaches think they're Bobby Knight and trash talking on the floor is just low-brow as far as I'm concerned. T 'em up early and often.

Why do you want refs to stop allowing something that's legal?

1. I could live with a 35 second shot clock. Although it may not happen often, I can't stand it when a team goes into stall ball. It certainly can make the 4th period of a game seem pointless and ridiculous.

 

2. I swear that I'm not the guy who keeps screaming '3 Seconds' to the refs at games. I rarely keep an eye on it. I've never been wild about the 3 second rule. When I played I found it to be frustrating and crippling to always have to be conscious of it, but if it's going to be a rule of the game it needs to be called consistently. I realize that a ref can't see everything, but it appears that it's only observed and called when a ref occasionally decides to.

 

3. It's also very frustrating to watch a poorly officiated game. I've never been a ref and I can only imagine that it's not easy to stay focused and unbiased for the entirety of the game. It irks me to no end when I see a game destroyed by bad calls or when a ref takes over a game with numerous calls against a team in succession that ruins a teams chances. I wouldn't mind seeing an instant re-play cam where each team has at least has 1 chance a period or at least a half to contest a call. If it doesn't go in their favor they get charged for a time out. Probably asking for too much there considering you'd need some decent filming of games with various camera angles. A lot of teams do film their games and a couple of official cameras could at least give a team a shot at contesting stupid calls. Probably asking for the moon on that one, huh?

Why should a coach not be allowed to call a time out?

 

A football coach can call a timeout from the sidelines

A baseball coach can go out and talk to a pitcher when he is in a bad situation

 

Why shouldn't a basketball coach be allowed to call a timeout? I like the rule and I'm glad it is in place.

 

At what point after the football is hiked (or kicked off or punted) can a coach call a timeout during the middle of a play? When can a baseball coach stop a live ball in play and stop a runner from making a dumb baserunning blunder etc. Make players accountable for their actions and reactions to situations and to have to listen to their coach for instruction.

Whos to say the ball was in play? Coaches can call it as a player is about to inbound a ball from the sideline or baseline. This is very similar to a football coach calling a T.O. before the ball is hiked.

 

But if you start splitting hairs and saying coaches can call timeout on dead balls and not live balls, it just makes it more difficult on officials, and that is not good for the overall game.

Also,

 

-- Eliminate the coach calling time out during active play. Dead ball situations I don't have a problem with. (The ball becomes live when handed to the shooter / thrower.)

 

-- Time outs should not require both feet on the floor, but definately eliminate the player jumping / falling out of bounds.

 

-- Keep the possession arrow. Starting every quarter or held ball with a jump is too great an advantage.

 

-- Push the ball to half court on a time out immediately following a successful try (for goal).

 

-- Do not paint the circle on the floor under the basket, make officials call it the right way.

 

-- Go back the release on free throws.

 

-- Simplify the uniform requirements to be in line with the NCAA.

 

-- Eliminate Title 9 scheduling requirements for prime time games. Too many programs are being forced to schedule varsity contestS (b/g) on the same night.

 

-- Put down a line (similar to football) 4 feet from the floor. This is the line that the CHAIRS must be behind. Each gym will be required to have 4 feet of space behind the chairs (about 10 feet from the floor). If you have to leave the back 2 rows folded in, then do so. We need space to play the game.

 

-- EVERY REFEREE LOCKER ROOM MUST HAVE A HOT SHOWER AVAILABLE.:dancingpa

 

Only the referees who work hard enough to earn a shower period should be rewarded a hot shower!:banana::ylsuper:

#2- Alternate possession to start the 2nd, 3rd, & 4th quarters (team that wins the tip gets it to start the 4th, other team gets it to start 2nd & 3rd). For jumpballs during the game itself, jump it up.

 

#3- Seed districts statewide. Makes for better quality regional tournaments IMO.

 

#4- The free throw rule mentioned in the original poster's #1 suggestion.

 

#5- A player transferring schools with varsity experience must sit out 1 semester before playing at his/her new school. I've gone back and forth on this one, and I know there would be some cases where a kid transferred for legitimate reasons, but something has to be done to eliminate obvious recruiting on the high school level.

A jump stop and an extra step or two is legal? Or the jump stop well after the dribble has been picked up?
