Patrick Towles has excellent speed and he had an absolutely remarkable season. Highlands didn't miss a beat with Patrick at quarterback.

HHS can travel 20 minutes and play 5 schools as good as if not better than X&T. The football is definitely better in Ohio than in KY. Columbus Desales a small catholic school could compete with any team in KY.They have played HHS twice and drilled them both times.

Towles had a good season. He will be a very good QB in a long line of very good QB's to come out of Highlands in the past decade.

 

But there was a difference in the offense with Bardo at the helm. Bardo had the whole summer to work with the WR's. They had the timing down on the routes and knew each others abilities. Towles didn't have the experience or timing. There were several games where I thought if Towles would have led the WR's, the pass was a TD. Bardo was leading the wideouts and they were going for TD's. Not a knock on Patrick at all, he will have time to develop that rapport with the wideouts over this offseason.

 

I'm looking forward to watching young Mr. Towles over the next couple of years. Should be an exciting offense to watch.

Actually Highlands was in place to win this game. They drove basically the length of the field the prior couple series by pounding it down the Stallions throat, only to have the ball inside DeSales own 25 and throw it all 4 downs to end the game. This I couldn't understand....HHS also had I think 4 field goals that game instead of TD's. That's the 16 points that would of won this game easily. Highlands had that game won!!!! Hardly drilled...

Absolutely not a down year. They lost 3 games in 2006 that I can think of that should of been W's. You have to learn to put teams away.

 

Lou St X.....HHS had them down at half at Paul Brown Stadium only to be overpowered by X's depth in the 2nd half. I can digest that loss..

 

Columbus DeSales......You already know how I feel about that loss.

 

Cincy Elder.....Kick them when they are down......

 

CovCath......Basically comes down to the last play of the game and CovCath pulls it out. They don't beat HHS at HHS in the playoffs. Very hard to do....Look at the record books. People can say what they want, but HHS (IMO) beats CovCath the 2nd time around at HHS.

It's important to note that our 04 state championship team had primarily all senior starters, so we were very green at the start of 05. Colerain had won the Ohio state championship the year before and had a very good team coming back (they were the favorite to repeat with studs like Eugene Clifford and Connor Smith on the team). We went into the Colerain game with a hurt starting qb and he reinjured his shoulder early in the game. Colerain knocked our back up qb out of the game with a concussion early in the second half. I think we may have actually been winning at half by one point or were down by one. Don't remember for sure. In either event, it was close at half. They did spank us in the second half though. The next week, a very banged up team played Lou X in Lou. We played terribly and again got spanked. Later on that year, we got rolled by SF DeSales. But we went on to beat CovCath, which was a big favorite. We got beat by LexCath 17-0 in the playoffs, but LexCath went on to win the state championship. They had some kid playing qb by the name of Justin Burke if you remember him. LOL. In 06, we again had a challenging schedule. We beat Elder every way but the scoreboard and Elder's coach said so in the newspaper. It should have been our first win over a GCL team in the modern era. We then played Lou X the next week at Paul Brown stadium in extreme heat. We came into the game banged up badly from Elder. We were winning at half, X won by two touchdowns, but it was a one touchdown game most of the game. Our kids were exhausted, with several playing both ways and injured. Playing Elder and X in back to back weeks is very tough on a small squad, much like playing Colerain and X in back to back weeks in 05 was tough. We had no where near the depth those two years that we did in 09 and it's a credit to Dale that these days we seem to have developed much more depth than we did back then. As you pointed out, the loss to SF DeSales in 06 was a very close game and we had been winning late. I won't blame the loss on any one kid, but had a receiver held onto a pass in the endzone in the last minutes of the game, we'd have won that one. Can't fault the kid as it was raining hard and the ball was wet and hard to hold onto. Things happen. I firmly believe that X, T and the Birds will eventually be castout by the fickle mob and have to play a separate playoff.

 

If this day comes, the word is, both programs will do as Montgomery Bell has done in TN and leave the KHSAA. At this point both schools can offer athletic scholarships. The KHSAA will have no authority to regulate this. So basically the public schools will be cutting their noses off to spite their faces. X and T will be able to cherry pick the best players IN ALL SPORTS in Jefferson and surrounding counties and So Indiana. If the Public Schools don't like the current environment wait until X and T really go after the best talent. :laugh:
