November 29, 200916 yr Eh, you win. Those stats are pretty darning. I maintain though that it's pretty hard to build the stats when you aren't given the reps. I stick by my assessment of Newton though. He is doing nothing to help UK right now. Bingo. You can't compare the two unless both are given the same opportunities. Newton was flat awful in this game. The play calls were awful and the D wasn't awful for most of the game.
November 29, 200916 yr Author Newton is the better option - he was 5-2 as a starting QB for Kentucky this season. With proper game-planning, adjustments and play-calling - he could've been 7-0. He's 5-2. Of those 5 wins, I'd rate Newton as a significant factor in 2 of them, being EKY (which any UK QB could do) and Georgia (which I will say is what we all hope we will see much more of in the future). He was called on to make the plays at the end of the game against MSU and Tennessee and couldn't do it.
November 29, 200916 yr Newton is the lesser of 2 evils, IMO. Cobb drove the ball 30+ yards in 3 plays and they brought Newton in the game. He did nothing, they tied the game rather than winning and then they lost. Terrible personnel decision-making.

November 29, 200916 yr The defense didn't lose this one. The offense had many chances to win it. For example, in the 4th quarter when they had to settle for a FG, and in OT when the missed a FG.
November 29, 200916 yr Rich Brooks and Joker Phillips lost this game by going conservative inside the 10. Why in the world do you take the ball out of Cobb's hands? Come on man if you wildcat it at the end the game is over it's sad 25 years in the row UK can't beat Tennessee.

November 29, 200916 yr Author I honestly don't see any way that Fidler would have went 5-2 as the starter. I think he'd have been at worst 4-3. The Georgia game, who knows. The only other win that you could possibly want to take from Fidler would be Auburn, and Fidler did just as much as Newton in that game. Higher completion percentage, only 3 less yards, higher YPA, better rushing average, same amount of TDs. He was in on the game winning drive and rushed for the game winning score.

I have to second what woodsrider said down the way. In both games where both QBs played Fidler outplayed or at worst played equal to Newton. Newton was then given the start at MSU, did fine. Did fine against EKU, and Fidler got some work in garbage time that game, and that was the last time he even played. He did nothing in those games to play himself out of a shot at the job. Newton did not outplay him until Fidler was no longer seeing the field (MSU).
November 29, 200916 yr I have said this all year and I will say it again: we lost because we did not give the football to Randall Cobb. Whether operating out of the wildcat or taking a hand off, our offense is most explosive when number 18 has the ball. This one is on the coaches for not recognizing this all year.
