November 29, 200916 yr I do. He has to work on bringing the ball down. Every miss is an overthrow. He is a true freshman and will be fine. Does nobody remember how Woodson looked as a frosh/soph? Do we only remember him as a jr/sr? I clearly remember seeing Andre' taking a TON of heat for his play early on this very board. Newton is a true freshman, going thru his trial by fire in the SEC. He will be fine. I'm with you, MT. :thumb: Newton will be very good in time. I am mad as heck that we didn't put Cobb in the wildcat and go for it on 4th down. I honestly think that was our very best chance to win.
November 29, 200916 yr I'm sick and tired of seeing Cobb in the "wildcat" with Locke coming FULL SPEED on the jet sweep and him never getting the ball! Its no wonder UT stopped Cobb on the read all night, they knew he wasnt going to hand it off. Joker, can you please hand the ball off to a guy with 4.2 speed, who is at full speed by the time he gets to Cobb in the jet sweep!? Please?....... On another note- Micah Johnson should be no where near the field on 2nd or 3rd and longer then 12 yards to go. He needs to move up a level and help Corey Peters! I know I know he had 13 tackles, mostly all running plays and a few Brown had run blitz on to help him. Not a johnson fan and think he is way overrated! That being said why does UK continue to play Man coverage all the freaking time! I'm sick of that to! Mix in some zone every now and then Brown! Wow all this and I'm not even much of a UK football fan, I just dont like UT at all!
November 29, 200916 yr Author Im almost convinced that UK will not beat UT during my lifetime. I would put Fla on that list as well. They've beaten both in my lifetime, and I think UK will beat UT eventually, though I have no idea when. I AM, however, convinced the UK will never beat Florida again. Unlike UT, most years it's a blowout.
November 29, 200916 yr I had waited this long to post anything on this game because I was trying to settle down. I have somewhat but still cannot understand the play calling, especially in the 2nd half. Newton was not the problem imo, not getting the football to Cobb and/or Locke more was a problem. I am trying my best not to start slamming this coaching staff. After all, this years Cats has won more than I thought they would but all I will say is I wonder if Barnhart may be sorry he named a "head coach in waiting". Especially with the likes of a T. Tubberville plus some others out there now. There imo is no plus side, moral victory, we had them in o.t. or any other something that some may come up with for this Loss to make it sound better. This game was Lost, another Loss (once again) that U.K. should have won. U.T. players and fans were laughing at it and they should......25 in a row! I hope that I will be proven wrong once again but I will say it again.....U.K. football will never be above "middle of the pack" at best in the SEC. U.K. no doubt has the facilities to draw players but for some reason cannot recruit the numbers of "SEC level" talent that it takes to compete. This coaching staff has done much better in recruiting but when you get right down to it the very good talent that U.K. does have.......other SEC teams have that level of talent and better two and three deep. A few very good athletes doesn't cut it in the SEC, it takes a roster full of them to win consistently in this conference. One of the good things going for U.K. and bowl games in the future is that a mediocre (or less) is now considred "bowl eligible". What a joke, six wins and eligilble for a bowl imo is laughable, if I am a coach or player on a six win team (not even a winning record) I would be embarrassed to be "rewarded:rolleyes:" with a bowl game. At least I am glad that U.K. is above .500, that way a middle of the pack bowl game may be legit.

Newton is a true freshman, going thru his trial by fire in the SEC. He will be fine. I agree, imo the play calling was the problem.....not Newton. Besides, if your not going to put Cobb there who else do people want.....Hartline? :ohbrother: I'm with you, MT. :thumb: Newton will be very good in time. November 29, 200916 yr Having read most posts I'm convinced some people have not watched UK football very long. How long ago would UT have beaten us by 21 and coasted down the stretch? How long ago would was it when you watched a UK vs UT game and knew the outcome 100% would be a loss? (No need for sarcasm, everyone thought UK had a shot last night). Brooks has brought this program from the rubble pile and made them into a quality team. They are now contending with UT instead of being hammered by them. They are taking Georgia down to the wire and even beating them now on 2 different occasions in the past 4 years. If Florida and Alabama are the clear leaders in the pack, LSU, Tenn, Auburn, Georgia on the next tier, UK is working their way into that teir. Are they there already? No. Are they closer than they have been for 20 years? YES! UK has made strides and I'm convinced they made more strides this season. Many of us thought 6-6 was the record for the year, however they were VERY close to having 9 wins. They ended up with 7, and if I was proposed 7 wins (including Auburn and Georgia) before the season started, I would have took it and ran. UK will now get a "lesser" bowl game. Well boo-freakin-hoo. Do you prefer to go back to 3-9 or 4-8? The Cats had a chance to go to a New Year's Day Bowl! They had a chance! Don't you get it? The fact that they had a chance is progress, and I believe they will get over that hump. Newton's future is bright, King looks like he will be a very, very good WR, the defense finally has quality depth, the offensive line was better this year than anytime I remember including having some depth, I believe in the direction of this football team. I'm not blaming the coaches for a loss, the fact that UK now is in the mix is enough for me to be patient with the program. If in three seasons UK hasn't made any progress then we can talk. But if any of you tell me that you knew Rich Brooks and co. would have UK where they are right now when he first signed on I don't know if I believe you. Rich Brooks and co. have earned our patience. They have earned our loyalty. I am sticking beside them.
November 29, 200916 yr If Newton was out playing Filder why did they bring Fidler in to close against Auburn and LA Monroe? Fidler could hand the ball off to Locke better than Newton could. :idunno:

They have earned our loyalty. I am sticking beside them. I agree with your entire perspective on this matter. IMO, you are 100% right. These coaches are the reason UK football is what it is. UK is probably the 2nd toughest job coacing-wise in the SEC behind Vandy. Kentucky has very little D-1 talent coming through the HS ranks, and Brooks, Joker and Co. have made them into a competitive team in the Best Conference in America annually. UK does not have the talent to be in that category IMO, though they are building toward it. They have gotten to the last two Bowl games with basically no one at QB, that is an amazing accomplishment. Look at how many future pros UF, Bama, LSU etc. have on their roster and then think about UK. Sure the loss yesterday felt horrible, but IMO people are losing perspective. UK is complaining about falling to a lower tier bowl, 5 or more years ago we as a fan base would have been tickled to death to make ANY bowl.
November 29, 200916 yr Since there are five threads open regarding this game.... I guess this is the best place to put this post. I am not a UK fan by any stretch of the imagination but I was really pulling for them in this game. Hated to see the outcome.

The others are about Joker Phillips and/or the coaching staff's refusal to use Randall Cobb as the primary ball carrier / quarterback. A lot of the same emotions, though.

November 29, 200916 yr The reason he didnt have the ball at the end of the 4 quarter was because the kid was gasped. He had to get a break.
November 29, 200916 yr The reason he didnt have the ball at the end of the 4 quarter was because the kid was gasped. He had to get a break. I'm calling bullcrap. He probably wanted to win this game more than anybody. It would of only taken two more plays and we also had a timeout to spare. This is just poor excuses from our coaches.
November 29, 200916 yr UT exploited Micah Johnson in pass coverage on 3 occasions and where was he on the game winning run? A big time player cannot let himself get taken out of the play that easily. He was held like crazy on the winning run, he started chasing an official.
