I was told that CCH had some TOs in HHS' territory. How many?

Great job by both teams. You can see a lot of talent out there. Great crowd. Music was a little on the, well, lets just say get it under control because it sounds silly what they are doing. Varsity games are good but others, needs major help.

 

It was fun seeing a close game again. Not that I didn't have fun before.:lol:

I recall the opening drive ending with a fumble at mid-field, an interception thrown from the 40 and picked at about the 25, and a missed 4th down conversion. There could have been others.

Looks like the ole "tearaway" jerseys were brought out of retirement just for the big game. Guess the refs caught on quick. And I think the jersey they brought out was the #46 that another pretty good running back at Highlands use to wear by the name of Justin "Blue Boy" Frisk.

Highlands controlled this game from the start. The game wasn't as close as the final score. The Birds defense played great. They executed their game plan to perfection. There was no room for Cov Cath to run the ball and the give the short pass philosophy worked brilliantly. Of Cov Cath's 214 yds passing 70 probably came on the last drive of the game.

 

Give the short pass philosophy worked because Cov Cath quit taking the short pass and started looking elsewhere. I know you don't want to get too predictable, but I would have continued to take the 5-7 yard pass on every play until they did stop it. The way Highlands was lining up, with their DBs 10-12 yards off the receivers, I would have kept throwing this until they adjusted, and then gone to something else. Until the fumble on the first drive, Cov Cath was having a very easy time moving the ball.

 

Very impressed with the running ability of Highlands QB. Also a few big time hits by the Highlands D. Looks like alot of promise in both of these squads.

Thanks for the compliments on the Highlands players. I thought CovCath had some very good players also. Frankly I was impressed with the passing abilities of both qbs.

 

Having said that about the passing game being good, my thinking is that it's very hard for freshmen qbs and receivers to be able to successfully move the ball down the field relying on the short passing game. Heck, varsity players have a hard time doing it. The ability to accurately throw that pass and catch it often enough to continually move the chains is usually not found at the frosh level. Most kids at that level just haven't yet been coached enough and developed the skills to be able to complete it with the regularity needed. The Highlands defensive coaching staff knows such (and the CovCath offensive coaches obviously know it too which is why they didn't do it) and would rather give up several short passes by laying off the receivers than give up one deep pass that could result in a touch down if the receiver gets behind the db.

 

I may be wrong, but that's how I analyze the situation.

I also thought the Shumate kid played very well last night. He kept contain better than the big boys do. He's also not afraid to hit anyone.

"Moose" McCoy looked a whole lot like Tebow last night. He could make one bruising RB, though. As for better than Roller...we'll see!

 

I agree. That is an awful high standard to set for a freshman. Nothing wrong with high goals but Roller is one of the best LB's I have seen in years.

The 2 turnovers that killed the most was the INT late in 2nd quarter which was returned to about the CCH 25, and the fumble where CCH converted a 4th and 2 at the Highlands 10.....they recoverd the fumble but it was back a yard and ended up being short instead of 1st and goal. That killed the CCH momentum about halfway through the 3rd.

 

All in all, 2 evenly matched teams, and congrats to the Bluebirds on winning the Championship.

I did like putting Beatrice in the Wildcat though.

D.J Powell is going to be one heckuva LB....wow he has wheels and can lay the wood for Cov Cath.

Is the lefty qb for HHS the same kid that played qb in the CCH/HHS JV game?
