NKY Pride in Highlands? Is Ernst Correct?

Featured Replies

Ok, after spending 30 or so minutes reading almost every comment on this thread, I have to comment. As a CCH grad (it's been a little bit), I have to say that 1) I respect Highlands, 2) I am happy for their huge win over St. X, 3) It's great they beat St. X because I know how those Ohio folks seem to look down on us KY folks, 4) The Highlands community is something every community should strive for, and 5) Can't we all just get along? I mean I have had some immature feelings towards Highlands while I was in High School but that's exactly what it was:immaturity. I have since grown past that and have learned to appreciate and respect them. I truly believe that both CCH and Highlands both respect each other although it may seem otherwise. I have met and partied with Highlands grads and you know what? They aren't yellow, purple, or even crazy weird. They are mostly just like you and I, wanting the best for their kids and schools. Is that really that bad? So, I don't know about how others feel, but I don't even look at it like a CCH vs Highlands thing anymore. I look at it like it's just two different but very similar types of people all striving for the same thing. I hope my posts makes sense and I hope I did not offend anyone because that is truly not my intention. With love.......The Beck

Great post! Where were you 4 pages ago?

I was reading this whole thread LOL.

I think people are glad Highlands beat an Ohio school but probably wish it were any other school than Highlands. I do not hate Highlands but some of the Highlands fans are so arrogant sounding all the time. It is better to be humble than to always seem to put other teams down as some fans do. Maybe that is just my opinion! I was more excited for the win by Cov Cath over Highlands a few years ago than this game.

:thumb: Absolutely, that's all he was saying. He wasn't trying to demean the win or bash HHS in general - simply questioning Ernst' sentiment that all of NKY is overwhelmed with "pride" over HHS' accomplishment.

He said nothing of the sort.

If you've read his (countless) posts, you would know Clyde has complimented HHS' program over and over and over. The thread wasn't intended as any sort of attack on HHS whatsoever. I'm not "proud" about HHS' win. I think it's cool. I think it showed everyone (especially the Ohio boys) that HHS is the real deal and there's some solid football over here. But I am not the slightest bit "proud" about the win. So am I an HHS-basher also?

?

Direct quote.

Papa, I question your intelligence if you really believe that I have reduced their victory in any way. I also question anyone's intelligence who can't get past the fact that I said "most" people do not feel the way Ernst describes. There are exceptions to every rule. You feel pride. Outstanding. Good for you. You're not in the majority.

Clyde you question my intelligence because I think you are a jealous fan that cant take pride in an accomplishment by your community (NKY) just because you, your boy, or your school didn't participate in this game. There isn't anything wrong with taking a little pride in the accomplishments of another NKY team. Following your train of thought I can only assume your not proud to be an American because that would be something larger than your own little click. You may be right maybe you should question my intelligence because I just don't understand why it has to about you for you to be proud to be associated with it even if it is just by locality.:idunno::confused:

Pride is a strong emotion and it is totally understandable if not everyone had this emotion evoked within them when HHS won this past Friday. However, I would only have a problem if people did not respect the win and the team for it. They deserve a whole lot of that after what they pulled off.

Unfortunately jealousy is rampant, and let's be honest sometimes the negative reputation that HHS fans have is not totally unwarranted (Same can be said for a couple other schools, or all schools to a degree). Those two things combined make for some hatred towards the school and program and some people refuse to get past it. Sad, but true.

:thumb::ylsuper: Nicely said. I'd feel no pride if another NKY team had pulled this off, but I'd be suitably impressed.

First of all, I think this thread has just about run it's course. However, did want to throw out this tidbit. I went back and reviewed ESPN's Fab 50 high school rankings beginning with week one. Just FYI, I am listing X's ranking since week 1 of the high school season.

Week1-NR

Week2-45

Week3-39

Week4-30

HHS has been ranked ahead of them all season, HHS is currently ranked 24 up from 27 after the X victory. The loss dropped X from 30 to 40. It's a great win for HHS, but if you put any credence in the polls, then HHS was the better team going in and should have won the ball game, which they did. Just thought I would throw that out there.

One poll, I believe St X was ahead of HHS in other polls, including apparently top 5 in the Massey. Locally, where people are more familiar with the two teams, how many picked HHS to win the game? What do you think, upset or not?

If you want to down play the win that's cool. The people that follow high school football know this was a major upset and a huge win for NKY. This could quite possibly be the biggest win in HHS or NKY history. :irked:

Hold on...........that is your interpretation. I was not playing down anything at all. If you read my post, I said it was a great win. You go on to say "the people", what people are you talking about? I have attended 100's of high school football and basketball games throughout the years all over the states of KY, OH, and IN. I realize it's a big win, but I was just pointing out that ESPN (who I think is a respectful sports source), has considered HHS a better football team than X from the beginning of the season. I have no dog in this fight, so you don't need to go attacking me. But, you must tell me how this was a major upset when they have been ranked the better team all season (I know you can pick another poll who ranks X higher)? I think the reason HHS fans consider this a major upset is the history of the X program. They usually put a great team out there, year after year and they are steeped in tradition similar to the HHS program. I think it's more of.......HHS finally got the 10K pound gorilla of it's back, instead of looking solely at who the better team was this season. JMO. I will say once again, great win for HHS.

Personally, I don't consider it an upset, but it's ridiculous to think that I have anything against HHS because I did not consider this win an upset, there is just no link between the two. As I stated, I thought it was a great win for the HHS team, but going in they were ranked 30 and HHS was ranked 27. One would think it would be a very good/close game based on these rankings, and it turned out to be a great/close game. I guess we can all pick our polls for different reasons, but each team is different every season, and you can't always base upsets on history and tradition.

You've obviously never met Clyde or read his posts very closely. He supports all NKY sports and, as far as I'm aware, has no grudge against any school. Funny thing is that before I met him personally a while back, I had assumed he had some association with HHS based on his frequent positive posts about HHS' program and players.

I spoke with him on the phone several times during the HHS-X game. His comments to me were that HHS was completely dominating X and looked to be the better team. During a subsequent conversation he mentioned it was a great win for HHS. Never once heard him say "I wish HHS had gotten killed", "I hate HHS", "I wish it was CCH" (he's a CCH guy) or anything else derogatory about them. So he's not doing standing backflips over their win. Big deal. Neither am I. Neither are a lot of people. Doesn't mean they are anti-HHS in the slightest.

Papa, your emoticons of "i dunno" and "confused" are telling. You are way, way off on your assessment. Trust me.

So....this is a good time to end this one.
