September 3, 200917 yr So long as they have a choice to opt out, I'm fine with it. :thumb: Me too....and the parents should have the choice for their kids to hear Bobby "When I was a boy, I thought that Americans can do ANYTHING" Jindal

September 3, 200917 yr Seems that schools are offering parents the ability to opt-out their children. And the decision is up to each class/school. So, since parents DO have a choice, does this change anyone's opinion? I am still annoyed about the child missing classwork that day, and of course many parents will have to stay home from work or find a sitter, but yes, not being penalized as an unexcused absence is helpful. Goshen Elementary is giving parents this option.
September 3, 200917 yr What would your reaction be if President Obama wanted to have this speech to talk about the importance of avoiding drugs? This wouldn't be a problem because the consequences of drug use are in the curriculum.
September 3, 200917 yr Thank goodness Bush the younger didn't propose this idea. With our school children being so easily indoctrinated, we would probably be raising millions spouting these: "You teach a child to read, and he or her will be able to pass a literacy test." "Families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream." Are we really that terrified that all of our children will run home quoting Obaba-isms? I guess I'm too naive to see what everyone's afraid of.
September 3, 200917 yr In an ironic twist, one Missouri school won't be airing the speech because of a lack of funding. Michelle Baumstark, spokeswoman for Columbia public schools, told the Columbia Daily Tribune, "We don’t have the funding or the equipment to support that type of broadcasting.” http://news.yahoo.com/s/ynews/20090903/pl_ynews/ynews_pl888_1

September 3, 200917 yr Some things that have been overlooked - some kids come from families that could care less about education or voting. If it were to be purely an evening event, these kids would miss out - and they may be the ones that need to be reached the most. Some kids, particularly boys with absent fathers, need to hear that education is important. They may only get this message from their teachers at the moment. I see no harm in allowing the president to speak to these children on this issue.
September 3, 200917 yr Up I-71? Huh. I go shooting sometimes on a farm out that way. Near Brahe's Orchard. Small world(state). Have you made the connection yet that TB&G is the one holding the "Guns Kill People" signs right outside of Brahe's Orchard? :D :D Up I-71 is correct. I know Bray's Orchard well. As to the sign, you'll have to remember that I am a gun owner.
September 4, 200917 yr When I read some of the comments on these boards I feel like quoting Barney Frank. HaHa Barney :sssh:
September 4, 200917 yr How do you feel about special assemblies during school so that MADD or DARE can speak? What about pep rallies? I'm in favor of pep rallies. I find MADD and DARE to be ineffective, but they have a demonstrated capacity to stay on topic, so I do not object.
