April 21, 200917 yr Why would they play those guys over Janish if they thought Janish could be the everyday SS? I am not the one claiming Janish should be the everyday SS. I simply feel he should get more opportunities to start. They also would've played Hairston because he had a great year when he was healthy last year. When he was in the lineup last year, the Reds were a much better team. I have presented only facts to back up my argument that Janish deserves more opportunities. I'm not stating that Janish should be the everyday SS. I'm not stating that Janish is the SS of the future. I'm not even saying that Paul Janish is the best option at SS for the entire season. But he deserves an opportunity to play. Maybe more accurately, Alex Gonzalez deserves a break. I've been told that the stats are not comparable. I've been told that Janish took too long to get to the majors. I've been told that Janish isn't an everyday SS because the Padres didn't pursue him. I'm going to take a break and get some work done. :isurrender:
April 21, 200917 yr Why are they not comparable? Can we compare any players' statistics? Janish was 4 years behind because he went to college for 4 years. You just implied that college baseball is not nearly on the same level as professional baseball. I agree with that. The much more valid comparison is what those guys have accompished at similar ages. I've made that comparison.
April 21, 200917 yr :laugh::laugh:You don't think a kid that played 4 years in college should be farther advanced than a high school kid? Homer still made it to the majors quicker than Janish did. I think that he should be further advanced and I think that Janish was more polished. Maybe that's why his minor league statistics are better than Gonzo's? But for some reason, Janish's stats don't equate to major league "success", while Gonzo's apparently do.
April 21, 200917 yr Off the top of my head I'll guess Jerry Hairston Jr. & Jeff Keppinger? If those are the reasons then the Reds couldn't have envisioned him as anything more than a few times a week utility player. Neither of those players is anything resembling and every day Major League shortstop. As a matter of fact the Reds chose to go with Hairston even though coming into last season he had only played 6 games at shortstop, with one start, in 11 major league seasons. Obviously, they don't think Janish can handle every day work at the position. No matter who they pick, this is going to be a sore spot for the Reds all season. I've seen at least two teams against the Reds hit the pitcher 8th. He should hit 7th in this lineup every single time.

April 22, 200917 yr Once again, we're barely two weeks into the season. If Gonzalez is still hitting poorly by the end of May, then it might be time to look into making a change. There is nothing in Janish's history that says he can hold the job, either. So even though this is not the best offensive team anyways. Your willing to maybe sacrifice two months of the season by waiting till the end of May, before you might not play Gonzo as much? I mean its not like I am saying bench Gonzo completely. However right now in just ten at bats which I admit is not much, Janish has shown more at the plate. I see no reason why not to give him a few starts in a row and see what happens, and have Gonzo spot start like Janish has done so far. I mean Janish even just coming up with a few more hits than Gonzo, could make a different in a win or a loss for the Reds. Your not going to lose much defensively at all, by doing it at all. So why wait till then when maybe it was like this the whole time, and the Reds start to fall behind in the division. If two guys are about the same on the field, it just makes sense to go with a guy who might be hitting better right now. Yeah ten at bats is a small sample size, that is why you should give them the chance and start him maybe two or three days in a row and see what he does. If he continues hitting the ball, then keep using him for the time being till he does cool off some. Or till Gonzo shows in his spots starts during that time, that he is starting to get it turnaround at the plate. I mean the Reds are going to struggle offensively with either one of them, however just makes sense to atleast to maybe give a guy who could be hitting just a little bit more opportunity. The reds offense will need any little extra hit they can get.
