April 21, 200917 yr Author How long do you give Gonzo before demoting him? What's the minimum he has to do offensively to warrant the starting position? I would think you would at least give him a full month or so, and I would think hitting around .240 would keep him in the lineup.
April 21, 200917 yr They then traded Burke to Seattle on March 25th, and just now reacquired him from the Mariners. That is correct. My point was that they had interest in Burke long before their regular SS went down.

And right now Gonzo is not a very good hitter either. He has never been a good hitter, but even worst this year. While as I Janish these days is just about as good defensively as Gonzo. So while not atleast give the younger guy a chance, since they both offer about the same these days. I mean Janish is not going to knock the cover off the ball, however if he could just hit a little bit better than Gonzo has so far this year. Then that would help the team. I just don't see the harm in giving Janish the start for a few games in a row, so see if he can atleast help out a little more than Gonzo has at the moment. Its not like its going to hurt anything, it could either help or be the same. There is not much risk at doing that, so I don't see the reasoning for why not to.

In a little over a full season at Louisville, his OBP was in the .310 range. In Gonzalex's 1st MLB season (where he got 86 AB's), he hit .151 with 3 HR, 9 BB & 30 K in 98 plate appearances. I think they knew that Gonzo wouldn't be available since the Reds didn't have another SS in their system that is ready to be an everyday SS at the ML level. The Padres acquired Burke in the offseason. Obviously they thought highly enough of him back in the Winter. Then, due to who knows what, he was traded. A player goes down, and Burke is (presumably) their #1 option again. How does that have any impact on their thinking about the Reds' SS? If they were looking for an every day SS, then why would they go after Janish? Why wouldn't they go after Gonzo? Couldn't it be that they want neither?

If Gonzalez is still hitting poorly by the end of May, then it might be time to look into making a change. There is nothing in Janish's history that says he can hold the job, either.
