April 21, 200917 yr Only one guy with 300+ ABs hit over .270 last year. So what's the difference? Team speed? Better D at SS and the corner OF positions? Better catching? And last but not least, better pitching? They get the team avg. up to .250 and they are way better than last season. BTW team avg was .247 last year. I'll take this team over the crud they have fielded since 2000 in a heartbeat. Last year they could hit the ball out of the park. This year not so much. So far they've found a way to score just enough, BUT eventually Rhodes, Weathers, and Cordero are going to start giving up runs. Eventually people are going to quit pitching to Votto and make someone else beat them. If Phillips, Bruce, and EE hover around .250 they won't score enough. I agree that this is a better product than years past, but can they hit enough to win?

He's on the team because of the contract he signed. I think many of us would agree with that. He's playing because of the money invested in him. It's not a bash on Gonzo. It's just life. If you pay somebody that much money, you're going to expect them to perform. At the very least, you're going to give them an opportunity to produce. How else do you justify keeping a guy in the everyday lineup when he hasn't played for almost 2 years?

And how many of those games they lost. Well so far they're winning those games this year. There's the difference

Gonzo isn't getting replaced by someone who is equal to him at the plate and not even in the same conversation in the field. . Are we comparing Janish to the "legend" of AGon defensively or the current day AGon?

April 21, 200917 yr I have always wondered what Janish had done in the plate prior to his major league experience. To my surprise, he has been solid at the plate his whole career; however, it's clear that he's not a middle-of-the-lineup type hitter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Janish '04 - Rookie Ball - .263, 2 HR, 22 RBI in 66 games '05 - Single A - .245, 5 HR, 29 RBI in 55 Games '06 - .278, 9 HR, 55 RBI & 8 SB -- 4th best K to AB ratio in the league at 1 for every 10.08 AB's. '07 - 2nd in the Southern League in Doubles & 4th in Walks. He was also hitting .293 in AAA when he was called up in '08. In two seasons at Louisville, his OPS is somewhere in the .670 range ... that is not "solid at the plate." He's a backup at the major league level ... nothing more.
