Well sure he was! It's not like all the crooked stuff started when Sutton got to town. The infrastructure was already firmly entrenched by the time he got there. Don't you recall comments by Pitino about how hard it was to put distance between players/recruits and UK's overzealous boosters because of how long stuff like that had been going on?

Sure it does, but during Sutton's term Casey took the fall, and not Sutton. Don't you feel that it is impossible to know what your players are doing 24/7? I'm not saying that Calipari isn't shady, I honestly have no idea. That was always my worry about UK hiring him, but if the NCAA office is saying he has no violations, and he has always been a pleasure to work with then what else can you say? I just find it ironic for some of the UofL fans to be bad mouthing him, and his reputaiton when their own coach actually has 8 previous violations.

Certainly a fair point, but how much control can you actually have? You can only do so much for a kid and at some point it is on them.

If I can add to that thought; I think Hall turned a blind eye to the booster support. I think he would conveniently look the other way when things were happening (kind of like John Wooden did with Sam Gilbert). He was an old school coach who probably felt the words "Plausible Deniability" were good ones.

 

That said, I always like Joe B. and thought he carried himself as the coach at UK with a dignity that was similar to Rupp's. Does that mean he was guilty of "shady areas", probably.

Certainly a fair point, but how much control can you actually have? You can only do so much for a kid and at some point it is on them.

 

I agree it's impossible for the head coach to monitor players 24/7. But if something bad happens under his watch, it still falls under the "lack of institutional control" mantra. Kind of like if you're driving your car, you get pulled over, and the cop finds a kilo of coke in your passenger's bag. You may not have known about it, but you'll still take the fall.

Inaccurate.

 

I remember well the issues the Lexington papers and others had with what happened in Hawaii. However it was considered the past and while at UK Pitino didn't do anything that raised the ire of the NCAA.

 

In fact what many might forget is the tale of Clifford Rozier. He was prize 6'9" post player who was transferring from UNC. He was considering UK very strongly and unfortunately he was taken by a then current UK player to Louisville for a Derby party. The distance violated an NCAA rule and Pitino informed the NCAA and immediately stopped pursuing Rozier. The young man ended up in a Louisville Cardinals uniform.
