How often did they attempt to throw the ball a game last year? It couldn't have been much less.

 

They threw about 18 passes per game in 2008.

If the Colonels cannot beat Highlands for a year or two then another title will just have to be a year or two away.

 

Yankees vs. Red Sox, Ohio State vs. Michigan, Cov Cath vs. Highlands... some rivalries were just meant to be.

 

I would rather win fewer titles than win by having to duck the Bluebirds in the playoffs. Besides, if we couldn't grind our teeth at Dale Mueller what would we do to keep ourselves occupied in the fall?? :D

 

You got 11 weeks to schedule the Bluebirds, good luck with bluebirds seems like you need to duck a few times:eek: rather than take that blackeye they been giving you all.

 

I agree it is a good rivalry.

Cov Cath has taken some blackeyes from the Bluebirds and given some blackeyes to the Bluebirds (not as many... but enough to keep things interesting over the years). Neither team has ever cut and run. The rivalry in large part comes from the playoff meetings. Take away the tournament and the rivalry can't help but be diminished. It would be like moving to a different region from Holmes in basketball. Part of the lore of the trip down state is what you have to do to earn the journey. (Mud Bowl uber alles)

Why dont Cov. Cath. just go back to playing in the division they are supposed to? Aren't thier numbers 4a or 3a? If they do that they will immediately be in the hunt for a title. Right now I don't see them beating Highlands for a year or two.

 

What good would it do for CovCath to drop down in class? Yes, they would be in the hunt every year, but aren't they now(most years)? This just doesn't make sense. You play up because of competition and it makes you better. You don't play down because you want to win a State Championship.

 

Losing makes you appreciate when you win. That mentality of playing down goes along with giving everybody a ribbon for participation. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose.

His first item: 'Change the players' mindset and how they work. They've always worked hard, but they needed to work better and correct their mental approach.'

 

His others are good, but this one will be the key to CovCath's success next year. Last year's team was far more talented than they displayed on the field, and one of the biggest obstacles to their success was in fact their mental approach to the game.

 

While they did lose some talented players to graduation, or will lose, the team next year should have just as much talent, overall, and if Coach Wirth is successful with just this one item on his list, the Colonels should be fun to watch next year.

I have complete respect Beechwood for their undeniable dominance in single A for the last 25 years. They were champs in '84, '91, '92, '93, '94, '96, '97, '99, '04, and '07. They were runners-up in '95, '02, and '03, and they've lost in the quarter-finals or semifinals to state finalists virtually all of the remaining years. I would have to say that, yes, they've proven they can pretty well tower over all of the single A schools.

 

However, they've also proven over the years that they can compete in the bigger pond...how may times have they beaten or at least hung with Cov Cath or Dixie? They scrimmaged Highlands for years in preseason, and I'm pretty sure they've played them in regular season a handful of times - they are this year if nothing else. Does anybody else think they should try playing up, at least in 2A, and see how they fair in a bigger division?

Beechwood would definitely NOT be permitted by the KHSAA to play up. They are not geographically isolated in 1A. Geographic isolation is the only reason accepted by the KHSAA for moving up.

 

And don't be surprised if when the next KHSAA realigns the classes, if Highlands and CovCath are both placed in 4A. With Holmes now being a 4A school, with CovCath being a 4A school and with Highlands likely to be either a large 3A or small 4A school when they realign, I can foresee those two schools joining Holmes and a relatively nearby 4A school (Pendleton Co?) to form a district.
