March 27, 200917 yr You always here what a class act Tubby was at Uk (which I agree with until the end) but no one wants to talk about him having the deal made with Minnesota or atleast working on the deal during the season. In my book that was one major classless act by him. Granted the only one I know of while at Uk but a very big one. He did what anybody else in his position would do. He covered his backside, much the same way anybody else would do when trying to find a better job fit. You're just taking it personal.
March 27, 200917 yr Author Yes, but he won those four titles in his final 26 years which is one every 6.5 years. Also made six Final Fours in his final 30 years, which is one every five years. Tubby went made one Final Four in 10 years. :deadhorse: And add to that Adolph also got the program the death penalty, the whole thing was nearly shut down. I don't remeber any even rumors of an investigation under Tubby's leadership.
March 27, 200917 yr Tubby and UK both needed to go different directions IMO. I like him but am glad he is gone and doing well. Billy Clyde is a good coach but is not a good fit in a program like KY where the head coach has to do more than be a film junkie. Bad fit. Wish him the best glad he is gone. I am confident they will make a great hire as it is still one of the best jobs in all of college sports. Next guy brings his recruits w Meeks+Patterson staying then the table is set to be a legend IMO.

March 27, 200917 yr He did what anybody else in his position would do. He covered his backside, much the same way anybody else would do when trying to find a better job fit. You're just taking it personal. Not personal to me. I think he did the right thing for him and his family by leaving. Im just bringing up the point that a very highly rated coach made a major unethical move and it was swept under the rug. You are right I would have done the same.

Then why are you holding him to a higher standard than you would yourself? Unless you were taking it personal.
March 27, 200917 yr To have an opinion on something it has to be personal? I disagree with what he done but dont lose sleep over it. I still consider him one of my favorite coaches ever. I just simply made the point that this was swept under the rug. Jim, is my opinion personal to you?

March 28, 200917 yr Author There was no death penalty. Rupp had nothing to do with the point shaving scandal. The program wa suspended for a year. You can sugar coat it all you want, but that sounds like today's death penalty to me. And yes, it did come under Rupp's watch. Check the history books.
March 28, 200917 yr Didn't Rupp have to win two fewer games to get to a FF in those days? UK's Tubby years are only a couple bounces away from being at least as legendary as Pitino's. Just the facts to clarify your inquiry: In '42 he only had to win one game to "be in the Final Four." In '66 he had to win two games. (He won 3 and lost in the Finals) The tourney did not expand to 32 teams until '75. (Everyone then had to win 3 games to get to the Final Four.

March 28, 200917 yr The program wa suspended for a year. You can sugar coat it all you want, but that sounds like today's death penalty to me. And yes, it did come under Rupp's watch. Check the history books. UK was suspended because of the Point Shaving scandal. The Cats from '49 admitted to "shaving points." The NCAA then suspended UK for the '53 season. The result was that Hagan, Ramsey and Tsroupoulus (sp?) graduated on time in the spring of '53. The next year they were playing their last year of eligibility as grad students. 2/3 through the season a Courier Journal columnist uncovered an NCAA rule prohibiting Grad students from then playing in the NCAA. Rather than risk their #1 ranking and 25-0 mark they voted not to go to the tourney. FWIW that Cat team defeated the '54 NCAA champ in the season by 13, set a record for winning margin that stood until '72 (27 points per game), and beat the great Bob Pettit and LSU in the season as well. I don't sugar coat things. The penalty had more to do with the players than with Rupp and it had to do with an NCAA that was concerned with Rupp's arrogance and dominance of the game then.
March 28, 200917 yr I've always found the animosity for Saul puzzling. Especially when you consider the current UK team probably wins 25-26 games with him at PG, and run away with the SEC title. I agree with you 100% maybe a BGP first for me , Saul on this team would have been at least 4-5 games better. I remember when he was taking so much heat Dave Baker had a running challenge that he and Saul would take on two Saul bashers and give them points in a game to 24. No one ever took up the challenge.
