March 17, 200917 yr ^ So you don't think playing zone a couple of possesions a game as in preventing Downey going one on one for the game winner or against LSU the last possesion would've helped. It is much easier to prepare for a team that only plays one way. Heck South Carolina would probably have had to call timeout since they hadn't seen zone from UK all year.
March 17, 200917 yr If I haven't developed a third option by the Florida game, what makes me think I can create one now? You have to be able to adapt your style to your players. Not the other way around. It's painfully obvious this team can't play a consistent man to man defense. They haven't improved at it. Teams are still shooting their best 3-point percentage when they play UK. It has nothing to do with the fanbase. It would be even higher if they played a zone.
March 17, 200917 yr It would be even higher if they played a zone. Just because you play a zone doesn't mean you sit back and let a team throw up uncontested 3 pointers.
March 17, 200917 yr Just because you play a zone doesn't mean you sit back and let a team throw up uncontested 3 pointers. Correct. How do teams shoot against the 'Cuse?
March 17, 200917 yr My thought is that unless there is something going on behind the scenes we don't know about, then give Billy Clyde one more year. While I may not like him a great deal or understand what he is doing sometimes, if he was good enough to hire, he is good enough to give a fair shot and in basketball when you are left any semblance of talent, 3 years is fair IMHO. I know it is tough for many to take when Tubby has done more with less this season, but Billy is UK's coach and ought to be given his fair shot. He does have more talent coming next year that should help. I truly believe that his biggest mistake wasn't when he stays in man to man all the time or some of his odd subsitution patterns, but basically running off Jasper. DJ could have made this team MUCH better at the PG spot. And next year, could have been special. Patterson, Orton, Miller, Meeks & Jasper could have been a VERY solid starting lineup. This BCG critic says give him a chance to make the team better next season then we will see what happens.
March 17, 200917 yr Just because you play a zone doesn't mean you sit back and let a team throw up uncontested 3 pointers. A zone defense doesn't work against a good 3 point shooting team. By that I mean they have at least 3 players that can make shots. What gets Ky in trouble is they sag down to help out and leave the shooter open outside. Tubby's teams played this way also. I would rather give up a two point shot any day than a three.

Nobody is talking about playing zone all the time. Change of pace. Throw a team's play called out of sync after a time out etc...
March 17, 200917 yr Nobody is talking about playing zone all the time. Change of pace. Throw a team's play called out of sync after a time out etc... I agree with that 100%. Just throw something different at them every once in a while besides the occasional trap out of the man defense.

If you play a zone as a rule like Syracuse does it doesn't lead to teams shooting a high % from 3. If you know how to play it you are usually no worse off than playing a man when it comes to opponents 3 pt %. However, you just can't decide today that you're suddenly going to play a zone. That will be a catastrophe.

March 17, 200917 yr If UK decides to let BCG go or If BCG decides the oven is too hot, then there is only a handful of coaches out there that UK should chase after IMHO. In no particular order: Calipari Donavan Pitino Knight (to hold it until a UK boy (Pelphrey, Ford) gets the needed expierence necessary) * I think they have to bring in someone with Mass Expierence.
March 17, 200917 yr Do people really think this team had so much talent that the only thing holding them back was they didn't play enough zone? They didn't have enough playmakers. BCG thought Liggins would be a playmaker and he wasn't.[/QUOTE] I wonder what he saw on his tireless recuiting trail that made him think Liggins would be an SEC playmaker? All teams need more than one option IMO for defense otherwise simple to defend.

BCG didn't have the luxury of depth so that if he missed it wouldn't be a big deal. In a few years he will have that luxury if he's not run out of twon first.
