As a coach, let's say you have two hours to practice offense in preparation for UK. Since you know UK plays only a man to man defense and rarely presses, you basically have two solid hours to work on and perfect your offense.

Same situation -- two hours to practice offense against a team that offers a variety of defenses. Now you must prepare against a man to man defense. And a 2-3 zone. And a 1-3-1 zone. And a full court press. And a half court trap. Suddenly, that two solid hours dwindles into maybe 30 minutes against each scenario.

If you get better by practicing and you have two solid hours to work on your offense, it may explain why teams seem to shoot so well against UK because they have so much time to perfect their gameplan against a simplified UK defense.

Nice breakdown...

Good post! I agree if a team does not know for sure what you may throw at them they better prepare for all possible situations or you have the upper hand.:thumb:

As a coach lets say you have two hours of practice in preparation to play against Florida. The only possibly way you can win is if a 3rd scorer steps up, or your SG scores over 40. The loser of this game can't make the NCAA tourney unless they win the conference tourney. Your only player capable of creating a shot for someone else is your post player and the only way he can do that is if Florida double teams him. As the coach of this team do you try to work on what you know and believe in or do you try to make the fan base feel better by teaching a zone?

:ohbrother:

If I haven't developed a third option by the Florida game, what makes me think I can create one now? You have to be able to adapt your style to your players. Not the other way around. It's painfully obvious this team can't play a consistent man to man defense. They haven't improved at it. Teams are still shooting their best 3-point percentage when they play UK. It has nothing to do with the fanbase.

Ok then take out the Florida game and put in the game after the Mississippi game. They were in good shape before that.

They had a third scorer step up on more than one occasion. What makes people think that he didn't think of or try a zone in practice only to have people like Krebs go off in practice? I have no idea whatsoever if playing a zone would have helped or hurt their chances. I believe that the coach does have an idea so I let him make those calls. If the coach is that bad then the AD should be in deep trouble b/c it was a terrible hire. I think the coach is better than that.

You've got it!

And I bolded one part for extra emphasis.

I'm not saying his style doesn't work. I'm saying his style doesn't work with this set of players.

It would be like Rick Pitino taking over a roster full of centers and making them shoot three-pointers and press non-stop. Would that work, or would he need to make some adjustments?

Do people really think this team had so much talent that the only thing holding them back was they didn't play enough zone? They didn't have enough playmakers. BCG thought Liggins would be a playmaker and he wasn't.

I'm saying suggesting that a zone would have helped might not be the answer either.

But not having it as an option is nonsense.

Why? The coaching decisions that BCG has made in his career got him to a position to be the head coach at the University of Kentucky. He's very capable of deciding if his team is better suited playing man or zone.

If he is very capable then it's time he starts showing it. You need to be more open-minded about coaching options and in game adjustments just as BCG does. JMO.
