For my money I would take Pete Rose over A-Rod. Yeah, I know what he did was wrong but it was not in his playing days, and what he accoomplished was without pharmacutical aid, unlike A-Rod, Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, and the rest. Give me Charlie Hustle everyday and twice on Sunday, and you can have the rest.

I don't see how the two could even be compared. I don't care if Pete Rose bet on every single game that he played in it's still not as bad as using performance enhancing drugs. What Rose did was wrong but it didn't affect the game itself.

^ I completely agree. It really bothers me that Pete Rose is looked at as the worst player in the history of the game, when numerous players are admitting to blatantly cheating.

Exactly my point but I have yet to hear one sports writer or commentator bring up this issue. I think that the fans of the game should revolt and boycott baseball until something is done.

I loved seeing Pete Rose, Johnny Bench, Davey Concepcion (?) Don Gullet, Ken Griffey SR, busting their tailends for the Reds, for a heck of a lot less money than todays players who give only about 60% of the effort of those guys.

The Commish (Bart G) had the guts, even if misplaced and misguided by comparision to todays standards, to ban Pete. It is time to ban the liers and cheaters and bring Pete back.

You just don't see guys with cool nicknames like "Charlie Hustle" anymore. WHY!!!???? Because they don't, they play for themselves and not the team or the fans.

Someone needs to let those guys watch "Field of Dreams" or "Bull Durham" and then make them start all over in the minors and work their way back up. Crash Davis understood, Shoeless Joe (yeah I know he bet on games too) understood but these guys don't. Then they may begin to appreciate the game that is "America's Passtime"

The Big Red Machine was great. I don't agree with Pete Rose betting on the games as a manager. However, I think what is taking place now with drugs in sports is worse. They won't make it to the Hall of Fame either. A teacher at my high school actually told us who was predicted to win each game in the 76 World Series. He was correct with all but one game.

Unfortunately baseball continues to be led by the likes of one Bud Selig. Largely hypocritical in that he expounds on the "ills" of other sports.......relishing in the arrest of NFL'ers for example, and yet turns the blind eye to blatant and obvious drug use that is killing the sport of baseball. He basked in the glow of the "home run race" and now laments the "fallen heroes". You can't have it both ways.......bottom line he is an owner looking out for the other owners. As for Pete (who arguably did more than any other individual to promote the game), first it was the cocaine users in the late 70's and now this and he is still on the outside looking in.........shame on Bud Selig, SHAME on baseball. :ohbrother:

I agree, but not for the reasons you are stating. Gambling on baseball when you are in a position to control the outcome, is the worst possible crime that can be done to the sport. Gambling on baseball was also known by all, to be the ultimate taboo. As far as steroid use, Im not going to defend it, but when it is obvious that your peers have an advantage, the pressure is there to compete. Im not talking apples to oranges, Im talking hydrogen bombs to firecrackers here.

Tell an athlete that roids is wrong, when the worst it will get them is more millions and better stats. Tell Art Schilster that gambling is wrong, when it has sent him on a never ending chase for the worst prison system ever.

I still have yet to figure how MLB continues to let players that violate drug use seek treatment and then let them come back into the league. Yet Pete Rose gambled on baseball and was banned. Why was he not offered the change for treatment and once completed allowed to come back into the league. Overall, IMO, its okay to drugs as long as you seek help afterwards and admit your addictions - then the professional leagues extend their hand to you because they feel as though they have saved you. Granted I understand the performance enhancement drugs are to assist a player with making them better but isn't there an addiction issue there as well. Rose was a gambler on a lot of issues - look at how he played - he wasn't afraid to gamble in every game in play in - he'd take a chance in the field and on the base. I myself wished half the players in professional sports would play as hard as he did. My overall is this, we now she high school and colleges having the same stand on drug use - admit your addiction and seek redemption and welcome back as long as you help our team to victory.
