I agree, but not for the reasons you are stating. Gambling on baseball when you are in a position to control the outcome, is the worst possible crime that can be done to the sport. Gambling on baseball was also known by all, to be the ultimate taboo. As far as steroid use, Im not going to defend it, but when it is obvious that your peers have an advantage, the pressure is there to compete. Im not talking apples to oranges, Im talking hydrogen bombs to firecrackers here.

 

Tell an athlete that roids is wrong, when the worst it will get them is more millions and better stats. Tell Art Schilster that gambling is wrong, when it has sent him on a never ending chase for the worst prison system ever.

 

Not sure that the families of Lyle Alzado and Ken Caminiti would agree with that.

I still have yet to figure how MLB continues to let players that violate drug use seek treatment and then let them come back into the league. Yet Pete Rose gambled on baseball and was banned. Why was he not offered the change for treatment and once completed allowed to come back into the league. Overall, IMO, its okay to drugs as long as you seek help afterwards and admit your addictions - then the professional leagues extend their hand to you because they feel as though they have saved you. Granted I understand the performance enhancement drugs are to assist a player with making them better but isn't there an addiction issue there as well. Rose was a gambler on a lot of issues - look at how he played - he wasn't afraid to gamble in every game in play in - he'd take a chance in the field and on the base. I myself wished half the players in professional sports would play as hard as he did. My overall is this, we now she high school and colleges having the same stand on drug use - admit your addiction and seek redemption and welcome back as long as you help our team to victory.

Rose and the steroids freaks is kind of an apples and oranges situation, but I agree that steroids is worse. Somehow Rose undermined the credibility and sanctity of the game, but players taking steroids didn't?

What Rose did was very wrong and he knew at the time he did it that it was wrong. MLB's ban of Rose was appropriate then, but I believe we have reached a point now that it is up to the HOF voters and fans to determine Pete's ultimate fate.

I don't recall if he agreed or not to be banded but IMO I don't believe it would have help anyway if he would have come clean in the beginning. IMO the problem is these guys - all of them - are somewhat role models to the public and they should be held to higher standards in life. Just like the public wants to look at police officers. It makes me ill to hear that a professional athlete does something wrong and the first thing you hear is the "treatment" word.

I meant to imply very little baseball enforcement consequences, not physical ones. My choice of words were quite poor.

That is true if the person gambling was betting against his team and throwing the game or shaving points. As far as I know Pete Rose never threw a game to win a bet.

Well they both cheated baseball too make money. But I bet AROD had the better payday.

IMO if any of these steroid guys get in the HOF (Bonds, A-Rod, Palmero, Clemens, McGuire, Sosa, etc...), Pete should.

1. Im sure many fans have doubts on if he only bet on the Reds. Even without evidence he opened the door for this.

 

2. Overworking your bullpen to make sure you pull a big bet off, would be worth banning someone for. I have no evidence that he did this, but the fact that he put himself in a situation where the temptation was there.....

Im not actually arguing that either should make it in. Im debating the point that you can link the offenses as the same.
