Would you rather get a ring and not play?

Featured Replies

After reading the multiple posts about T and X and the number of kids they have on their teams I was just wondering. Would you rather go to a school and not play much and win a ring, or would you rather be a full time player and not have such a good chance to win a ring?

I would rather play. I also asked my kids this very question and they also said they would rather play than be a tackling dummy, just to get a ring.

I would think anyone with a competitive bone in their body wants to be on the field. However there is something to be said for those that contribute in practice for the good of the team. Those kids are the unsung heros.

Not everyone is a starter. If you play in a T or X type system, is the implication that your role is not important if you are never on the field on game day? Is the implication that you don't contribute to the overall success of the program if you don't start in the games? Whether they start or are tackling dummies, players at X & T are every bit as vital to the success of the program as the players who's name make it into the newspapers each week. I KNOW the players don't feel their contributions are less, nor do they feel they didn't earn their rings.

I, for one, would rather play. I know that my son feels the same way.

He did NOT get to play as much this seson as he would have liked, due in part to having knee surgery in the offseason and the team doctor being concerned about the damage that was done to his knee prior to the surgery. He did play though, and he's happy that he did contribute to the Falcons championship season.

I agree here. It's a no brainer and all you have to do is the math. A huge school isn't gonna be able to play every kid but I am sure everyone has worked just as hard.:thumb:

I wasn't implying good practice players aren't important. Fact is the more competetive your practices the better the team. I was just wondering which you would rather be a part of?

I think everyone agree's that every person on every team is equally important to their team. I took the question as would I rather play full time on a team that doesn't have a very good chance of winning a title or never playing and win a title (aka get a ring)? I think most kids would rather play full time if given a chance but I also think that kids who play on teams with a large # of kids think they will get a chance or at least work towards a chance to play and that is what makes those teams very good year in and year out. When you have enough kids to have competion for playing time at every position it helps make you a championship caliber team therefore every kids is vital to every teams success!

At Trinity & X, you never know when you may hear your name called. I know that, for instance, there are no separate JV/Varsity practices. You earn your right to dress each Friday night as a part of the Varsity squad. You practice with the expectation that your performance will be rewarded with a suit up. If it doesn't happen this week, it could next. Keep practicing hard, keep improving, and you could be the next "star". If you're a "star", you better stay on your toes in practice and keep your head focused on the fact that nothing is guaranteed. That's why our practice teams are not just practice teams, and our JV is not just JV. EVERY kid pracitices with the hope that the next game, they're on the field.

Been there, done that. Didn't play much, but it was pretty cool being on your school's first state championship team and its only football state championship. BTW, my ring was stolen about 30 years ago.

I would much rather play and not get a ring than not play and get a ring hands down. I played the game in order to play the game.

Ask the kid (I think his name is Nolan Higgins) who apparently was a 4-year scout team player for Trinity who got to carry the ball about 8 times in the SK-Trinity championship game. From what I hear he did not mind not playing in games. But to each his own. Different strokes, etc.

Now way do I go to a schoool knowing my chance of seeing the field is zero to none. I would go to the school in my own backyard and let things happen as they should.

I think everyone out there wants to play. I know that when I played we had some of the most dedicated players running the scout team. I truthfully believe that if it were not for them we would not won state. These are the kids that could have gone somewhere else to play and probably started but wanted the ring so much they would push the sarters to make sure we got the look we needed. Thank goodness we had those type of guys.
