I would much rather play and not get a ring than not play and get a ring hands down. I played the game in order to play the game.

I would much rather play and get the playing time than sit the bench. I'm not saying 2nd and 3rd teams don't get experience but let's face it, playing is playing.

Just a few thoughts. First, not everyone on X and T are players in the sense of the word that they would start somewhere else. They want to be part of the team for the friendships etc. that have been talked about here. They understand that anywhere they still might not be "players". Also, time helps people's memories change. 15 years after the championship, most people don't remember who played and who didn't, just that johnny was on the state championship team, has the ring, and the memories and friends to prove it.

I would rather go to a school where I could get an outstanding Catholic education, all the other stuff is icing on the cake!

Not everyone is a starter. If you play in a T or X type system, is the implication that your role is not important if you are never on the field on game day? Is the implication that you don't contribute to the overall success of the program if you don't start in the games? Whether they start or are tackling dummies, players at X & T are every bit as vital to the success of the program as the players who's name make it into the newspapers each week. I KNOW the players don't feel their contributions are less, nor do they feel they didn't earn their rings.

 

This is true, but why not go to a place like CAL that has an up and coming team and be apart of building a program and tradition and play instead of being 1 of a 150 kids trying to get 22 spots not counting their 120 freshmen. There are very good program though out the state that might not have the tradition that X and T have yet, but they had to start some where. Kid have a very short sports life and if they can play then they should play. Most kids will never see the field again after high school. Football bring a lot of great memories and I think the ones that are made on the field are the ones that are the ricest, not just wearing a ring that others played in the game. There are lots of great alternative, good coaches, good academics, and discipline just like X and T. There has been kids that would have been a part time player at X and T or maybe not play at all, come to a place like CAL and end up gatting a D1 scholarship, (David Risher) why shouldn't kids have that opportunity. LET THEM PLAY!!!

The "football experience" is about playing. I would'nt feel privelaged to wear someone elses ring

For my family, it's simple....first, CAL isn't a Catholic school. Second, my son's heart was set on going to Trinity.

 

My son wanted to go to Trinity. Not just to play football there. He shadowed St. X, but his heart was all Trinity.

 

There was no regret in that decision at any point of the 4 years he was there, even the three years he played football. And, all things considered, I don't think he'd be where he is now, if it weren't for him following his heart.

I'm still trying to understand how, if one participates on the team, one isn't a part of the success, or didn't "play". The most important part of the game of football is practice. Without , a team doesn't win on Friday night. Whether you play in the game, or you line up as the opponent on Tues, Wed and Thu before the game, you "played" and you contributed. At Trinity, success and failure are shared equally amongst the TEAM.

Yep, and everyone one of those kids who practice are doing it for a reason - to play. Don't kid ourselves when we say to "do your job" and be a "good teammate", to those kids who don't get to play. Yes, we are all smart enough to know how important it is to have tackling dummies for our studs, and how important it is to have a good scout team, but ask everyone one of those players from this past weekend that did not play a down, "What was your number one regret about today?". Guarenteed, it would be I wish I could have played. That's such a grown up way ot thinking about it, just because most all of us as working adults know we do the job, but someone else gets the accolades. What do you want on Friday for your efforts - to be paid. What do you think the HS athletes pay is - PLAY. Be real, and look at it from the players perspective.

I don't have to ask one of those kids. I have one of my own. I know exactly the disappointments, and the days of frustration. I also know that in the end, when my son had to stop playing football, it broke his heart. And he never played a full quarter of varsity ball. Don't tell me to be real. I know what I'm talking about.

 

The situation that a player is in at Trinity isn't for anyone. But I could list dozens of benefits my son gained from the experience, even though he didn't "play".

I have a great respect for those other schools, and CAL especially. They're an excellent school, and they've done everything the right way. But, I was offering a perspective that (believe it or not) is important to some making the decision.
