December 2, 200817 yr I too have had to put down more than a few good dogs over the years and it is never an easy thing to do. Right now I have a 14 year old Bull Mastiff that is about at the end of the road. My wife and I are hoping the old boy makes it through the winter, but there is no guarantees. He is still getting around ok and takes plenty of nourishment so I guess he is doing all right. I do not want to take that walk with him, our Copper, but I will win the time comes. My prayers are with you.... God bless you and comfort you and your family... and the family of all those that shared their loss with us. Especially bless those that did not because they are hurting too bad to talk about it.
December 2, 200817 yr My family had to do this to my dog many years ago. I was around 12 years old at the time and it was a dog I grew up with my entire life. When my parents called home I was completely devastated. We have since got a new dog but it will never be the same.
December 2, 200817 yr Terrible to hear. I can't even imagine the wreck I'll be if I ever have to make that decision for Jack. Mcpapa, great poem...Definitely got choked up on that one.
December 2, 200817 yr I had to let the vet put one of my dogs down in the past. It's very hard and I'm sorry for your loss.
December 2, 200817 yr That's rough. I remember having to put down my Golden Retriever (Blaze). He was my best friend through childhood. I sobbed like a baby that day.
May 9, 201214 yr The worst thing about having long-time, loyal family pets. But when it comes time to make that dreaded decision, I wouldn't have it any other way than to be there at the end; as in the last paragraph of the following: "A Dog's Prayer", by Beth Norman Harris Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me. Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do. Speak to me often, for your voice is the world’s sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps falls upon my waiting ear. When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshiper. Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger. And, beloved master, should the great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest - and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands. It's taken me a couple weeks to be able to post this. Our wonderful Golden Retriever passed away in her sleep two weeks ago. She was with us for almost 11 years. It's hard to express in words what she meant to us. We miss her terribly, but are so blessed to have her as a part of our family for so long. R.I.P. Goldie:cry:
May 9, 201214 yr So sorry to here. God Bless you and your pup. Our Bailey is 11, but she's still in real good health. Thank God.

But I'm right there with your feelings on this. It has been about 4 weeks since we had to have our Jack Russell of 18 yrs put to sleep after a stroke. Couldn't even talk about it for 2 weeks. It's still tough. We had him (Rambo) cremated. RIP tough guy.

May 12, 201214 yr I'm sorry for those who lost their pets, it's hard having to put them to sleep. I never had to put a pet to sleep, but I will have to within the next two weeks. I have two 16 1/2 year old cats, indoor all their lives, one was always only about 8-9 lbs all her life, she is now down to 3 1/2 lbs, all the weight lose has happened the last two years, with a good part of the lose in the past 6 months. Now I must decide if I should let the other one go as well, as they have been around each other all but the first 3 months of their lives, the second one is scared of noise and anything else really, not sure she will do very well without her sister, and with me living alone, I am not sure she will like the fact I will continue to not be there about 12 hours a day, and these are my last pets so no chance of getting another one.
