November 29, 200817 yr Did the hardest thing I've ever had to do this morning. He was one of my best friends and I wouldn't trade most of my family for him.
November 29, 200817 yr The worst thing about having long-time, loyal family pets. But when it comes time to make that dreaded decision, I wouldn't have it any other way than to be there at the end; as in the last paragraph of the following: "A Dog's Prayer", by Beth Norman Harris Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me. Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do. Speak to me often, for your voice is the world’s sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps falls upon my waiting ear. When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshiper. Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger. And, beloved master, should the great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest - and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.
November 29, 200817 yr Did the hardest thing I've ever had to do this morning. He was one of my best friends and I wouldn't trade most of my family for him. I'm sorry for your loss. I had to do the same thing last year. It was the worst day of my life. God Bless
November 29, 200817 yr :cry:I am so, so, sorry. I remember the night we had to let Daisy go. It made both of us physically ill. My heart still hurts for her. She was the best dog. Now, we have Molly...she is quit a girl as well. It has been 2 years without Daisy and I still miss her.
November 29, 200817 yr My heart goes out to you and your family  I've lost several dogs in the past 10 years and each lost is difficult. Time will lessen the pain, but you will never forget the loyalty and companionship given to you by that one special friend.
November 29, 200817 yr I too, am sorry for your loss. We lost our Golden Retriever a few years back. He got ill on my first deployment to Iraq and passed a few months after I got home. We were devastated, so I can't imagine what you had to go through to actually put him to sleep. Later.
November 29, 200817 yr Author Thanks for the support, that poem put me in tears. Luckily we didn't have to do it, he passed in the car on the way.
November 30, 200817 yr Very, very sad to hear. We had to put ours down a few months ago. The drive to the vet was terrible. But when we had to hand him over to go. I was devestated. Cried like a baby. I didn't read the poem above because I knew it would break my heart.
