Is drinking a sin??

Featured Replies

Wondering what everyone thought on the issue of drinking alcohol.

Is it a sin?

I'd like to hear everyone's thoughts on this.

I don't think that consuming alcohol is inherently sinful.

From discussions with a few priests, I have heard a few different outlooks.

One is that if you drink until you don't remember, it is a sin.

Another is that if you drink only to get drunk, it is a sin.

Even another is that if the amount you drink changes the way you behave, it is a sin.

I think the point is just to keep it in moderation.

While I very rarely drink, I don't consider it a sin if other people do.

I was once told that it wasn't drinking God had a problem with, but he warned us against drinking because when you consume a lot of alcohol your decision making process is affected and God put out a warning against that.

The Bible talks about drunkeness being a sin. So, drunkeness would be a sin. Drinking, unless it leads to drunkeness, would not.

One of the things to consider is that Jesus' first miracle was turning water to wine.

I really believe Jesus turned the water into new wine which is grapjuice. Regardless, for me drinking and tobacco is a sin because God told me not to use them. A lot of people who have a personal relationship with God will be convicted of different things as their relationship grows. In my opinion.

If it is a sin then I am in big trouble. I don't know the answer to that question.

Being a drunk is a sin.

Moderation is key, basically where your heart is, if you love to drink, overeat, or have sexual relations more so than the Father, then yes it is a sin.

lbbc nailed it. Drinking isn't a sin, drunkeness is. Same goes for food. Eating isn't a sin. Gluttony is.

I don't think drinking is a sin at all. I choose to drink very rarely, because I don't like how it makes me feel, but I have a lot of friends who drink alcohol like it is water, and I still think they are good people.

Where does it say that Jesus turned water into non alcoholic wine? If the wine in the Bible was basically grape juice, then why does it speak to drunkeneness?

I don't believe that drinking is a sin, but drunkeness is a different story.
