November 18, 200817 yr As far as the other sinning, what if we work at Wal-Mart and they sell alcohol? What if I work at the Corbin Wal-mart, which does not, but the corporation as a whole does sell it at different locations? I am still getting some of the fruits (my pay) from the sale of it. Same if I go to a facility that sells food and also alcohol, but is in a dry area and does not sell alcohol. What about cigarettes? They can kill "the temple" that is you. The "sin spin" can be put on about anything. Distribution of the alcohol does not make you the bad guy. I'm sure that there are as many people who do not over do it as do. If you do believe it (distribution) does make it a sin, you may want to take a look at where you work and see what all is included in the company portfolio. You could be working for a firm that also brings in revenue from alcohol or tobacco and not even know it. Therefore, you are a recepient of the proceeds from the distribution, also, even though you are not with that particular division of the firm. Think about it. A fact like that could put you into at least shallow hypocritical waters. From my personal perspective, I wouldn't feel comfortable. It would bother my conscience and I would constantly wonder whether it was wrong to do it...for me personally, I think the right choice would be to keep myself out of that situation altogether. Others may be fine with it and I have no problem with people in that line of work. I think Romans 14 & 15 along with 1 Corinthians 8-10 delves into the idea that things that are a stumbling block for some may not be for others. Just because I say I wouldn't be comfortable with something, doesn't mean I'm condemning those that are.
November 18, 200817 yr Author I don't know. Without thinking too deeply about it, I'd be inclined to say no... I do think the responsibility falls on those consuming the alcohol. However, if there are certain people that I know to be alcoholics or who regularly partake in dangerous behavior when they drink (drunk driving, violence, etc.), then perhaps it could be a sin to sell them alcohol when you know what they do with it. Additionally, we're instructed to use discretion with our Christian liberty if our actions could lead others to stumble. So, to be honest, I don't think I'm qualified to determine whether your wife is sinning by selling wine/liquor as part of her job. I think the answer could vary depending on the customers. I can tell you that I would personally have a hard time working a job that centers around alcohol and its distribution. I totally understand. The one aspect of my wife's job is that she actually doesn't see the customers buying her product. She puts in on the shelves and leaves. As for the bolded part, my wife loves her job. It pays well and provides our family with a great life. Her company also allows us to go to many special "functions" as well, including the Derby every year.

Also, if I were in a situation where that's the only way I could provide for my family and make a decent living, I might be forced to get comfortable with it. :sssh:
November 18, 200817 yr That is overreacting. You would be justified to be angry, but not to do something like that. If someone comes up and slaps my child and then I slap them. Is that justifiable? One of my Dads commandments was to never start a fight but always end it.
November 18, 200817 yr If someone comes up and slaps my child and then I slap them. Is that justifiable? One of my Dads commandments was to never start a fight but always end it. No, that is not justifiable. Unless they are still slapping your child, it is inappropriate to hit them. Yes, you should end a fight but by means that necessarily have to be jumping in the fighting.
November 18, 200817 yr Maybe thats his wife and his twin sister at the bar, so are we judging? Which is a sin. I'm just trying to add a little humor (which I'm not good at) instead of a bible verse. I hope he's not looking at his twin sister like that....

One of my jobs is to manage several large civic events. Apart of that is selling food and drink to the general public. I love my job, I am great at what I do, it pays pretty well and there is a personal reward for watching thousands of people come and have a great time because of my hard work. I watch over these people to make sure they do not over indulge in alcohol or food for that matter. Some people don't drink at these events and that is ok. It is a personal choice. I feel no guilt or believe that my job is wrong/sinning.
November 18, 200817 yr I'm not addressing the specific example of his wife working at a liquor store, but rather the line of reasoning you used to conclude she wasn't sinning. I don't think we can say something is or isn't a sin based on whether the law of the land deems it legal or illegal. For starters, the law of our land may differ from somewhere else. For example, its illegal to sell alcohol in some counties, but not others. Who is right? Or is there no absolute? Does it merely depend on where you are and how the majority feels about something or how it happens to be legislated there? That's my point. Depends on whether or not you want to look at the old testament or new testament as well. The scripture in old testament implied that we were to follow the laws of the land, however at that time the law of the land was quite literally gods word. I was taking an old testament approach, without considering the change between the old testament and the new testament.
November 18, 200817 yr The sin in drinking comes from the fact that it may cause a brother to stumble. So would the use of tobacco, and I, personally, do not want to be a hinderance to anyone when it comes to my witness. The body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and we should treat it with respect. That also includes avoiding overindulgences in anything, (i.e. food, beverage, computer time (sorry BGP'ers) etc. ) While I may have the personal liberty to imbibe I choose not to lose my witness with those that find it a stumbling block. Thus I choose to consume no alcohol, or smoke any tobacco products for the above mentioned reasons. Abuse of anything is a sin. And by the way, drinking or selling of alcoholic beverages is prohibited by our church covenant . . . I would be violating it if I consumed or sold these type of beverages. I choose not to do it for a variety of reasons.

I'll just say, that from a Christian perspective it makes no sense to approach a religious/moral question without considering the New Testament. A true Christian perspective has to have that as its foundation.
