When interviewed this weekend, UT's AD said that he would be evaluated on his total body of work, not just this season. He has won at a 75% clip for a career....???

I saw that I believe that he is safe this year but if this happens again he will be gone.

This year is the "again." They went 5-6 in 2005.

They were also in the SEC championship game last year...I hate UT but I really don't know what will happen.

If he fires the O Coordinator, he probably gets another year or two.

I agree, this would give him some more time. I think he needs to do it sooner (ala Tubberville) than later, if his goal is to save his job.

It will be hard to get rid of a man that donates $1 million to the univeristy every year. I still think he's done, especially if he loses to UK and/or Vandy.

How many times can firing an assistant save you?

I think what we've really found out is how good Cutcliffe is.

1982-1998 - Cutcliffe is at UT.

1998 - UT wins title.

1999-2005 - Cutcliffe not at UT (Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Retired...)

2005 - UT goes 5-6.

2006-2007 - Cutcliffe returns to UT. Vols rebound to go 9-4 and then 10-4 making the SEC title game.

2008 - Cutcliffe goes to Duke.

2008 - UT is 3-5 with 4 games left

2008 - Duke is 4-3 with 5 games left coming off a 1-11 season.

Isn't that what they think every year?

Considering going down to the UK / UT game, because I think UK may have a shot this year. :D

Yes, they do seem to think that every year, but I'm hearing it even more this year.

While a lot of people think he's gone because of wins and losses, a lot of people alos don't realize the millions and millions of dollars he raises around the state for the athletic department. He is still one of the most popular public speakers in the state and that's a lot of greenbacks to wave good bye to.

I doubt he'd be that in demand as a speaker if he were no longer the head coach, as whoever replaces him would then be doing the high-dollar speaking engagements.

I think he gets another year...but the screams will be heard far and wide in orange-land; he's likely to lose to Vandy AND UK this year...when was the last time THAT happened?

Will he be? Probably not. They seem addicted to keeping the guy.

Should he be? Absolutely. He has driven that program straight into the ground. If Arkansas' QB doesn't leave the ball on the ground in the '98 SEC Championship game or play against an FSU team that wasn't starting their 3rd string QB, I think he'd be gone already because he wouldn't have that one title to lean on.

I don't think they are going to shell all that money out for what has happened this season. I could understand it but I think he gets another year to prove.

Money won't be an issue. There is a $6 million fund to in place to cover his buyout should this come to pass.

But they always say good teams find a way to win. They won regardless, no one remembers them almost losing except for the naysayers. Either way they have a banner to hang and others do not for thier SEC EAST Championship.
