December 29, 200817 yr Clevenger (Sportsville) does not check age exemptions. Teams could enter in one of his weekend tournaments with more than 3 and he would not care or want to know. State or regional tournaments he would probably check. I have heard Pouncy talk about all exemption tournaments. Don't know much about these types of tourney's. At the school ball level everyone I've seen is grade associated.
December 29, 200817 yr Not bashing AAU-I get there has to be a cut off somewhere, just didn't know if there was some reason why it didn't match up with high school eligibility (Aug 1st instead of September 1st). I have noticed that all states are not the same even on this issue as some states have it worded that you can't turn 20 and be eligible for high school athletics. Are there any state tournaments that are based on grade only or age only? Yes, the KBA hosts the middle school state tournaments for each grade. You can go to their site and see the schedule.
December 29, 200817 yr Some of the AAU teams/coaches are about winning with high school principles. I love it when I see AAU teams at an early age/grade play man to man defense knowing that a zone would probably work better. Welcome to the forum Rush2112 and great name by the way, one of my favorite albums. Playing man-man is really a huge focus for my son's team at this point. They used to play a 1-2-2 trapping zone that used to cause a lot of turnovers but as they get older kids can throw over top and are better at avoiding the trap. Letting them play man-man forces the kids to move their feet and play good defense. It also forces the offensive player to work on ball skills and seeing the floor for cutters. 14U division at SOAS is one of the best in the state at this age level. There are 5 teams that could do very well at the State Tourney. With that said, I would say Div 2 state tourney. If you take Top 10 kids off those 5 teams you could put them in Div 1 and they would compete for the STate Title at that level and probably do well at Nationals.
December 29, 200817 yr I agree Spindoc, as much as I will agree that a 15 yr old has an advantage over a 13 yr old I say lace em up and play ball. It is what it is and if you dont like it then go play at the YMCA and take your 8 inch trophy at the end of the year for participation. AAU is for kids that want to play the best and WIN!!! In the end you have to lace them up. I think some of you have mis-understood the earlier post I submitted. My point is that 15 year old playing well against kids 1 1/2 or 2 years younger is not as good as everyone wants to believe. In a few years when these younger kids mature then you may see a leveling of the field. The younger kids need to keep competing and in due time, when their bodies mature, they may be the best player on the court. I will not allow my son to 'play down'. Rather, I challenge him to play against tougher and older competition. In the end, I think that is what will make him better. Him running around beating his chest saying I dominated a kid two years younger doesn't do a whole lot.
December 29, 200817 yr The league is wide open right now... Top 5 teams could beat each other on any given Sunday... Bulls lost a tough one last night. Tied with a minute to go with Flash, seemed like one of the three officials took it upon himself to be the show... Not sure why this game had three officials but it made the game worst at the end... Those corner courts are too small for three officials and 10 players... It was a great game that the players should have got to decide but didn't go that way... Answer this, how can an official take a point off the board, when the official book and scoreboard (SOAS employee) had it right? I agree, that is a really competitive league and it will be wide open. I think it may go deeper than 5. The Wolfpack is the best team and it sounds like the Warriors are right there with them. Beyond that, I believe just about anyteam out there can win on any given night. It will be a fun tourney to watch.
December 29, 200817 yr That Flash team is defensively fun to watch. Mark Ogle, the coach, has been playing man to man defense with that team since the 5th grade. You can tell he has his players buying into man to man principals with help. In an age of playstation, X box....all offense mindset, kids just getting after it defensively what a joy!!!!:thumb:

December 29, 200817 yr The official can't - Only the individual working the "official book" can change the score after conferring with the officials. The official in question likes to be the center of attention. I was also curious as to what happened to have 3 officials on the floor. Very interesting??????? Not exactly Rule 2.11.10 The score may be corrected any time it is discovered before the final score is approved. This situation is not due to the inadvertent setting aside of a rule but is the result of a mistake in record keeping. When there is a discrepancy in the score which is correctable and the referee is positive he/she knows what caused the problem, the referee shall order the correction to be made.

You know that sad thing about this, was it was over a kid making a free throw. He did, and like any kid he knows exactly how many he made from the line.
December 30, 200817 yr Your comment is strange. When is playing a sport at the middle or high school level (school or AAU), not about winning????? A school team of 7th graders could all be kids who should be in the 8th grade and so on and so on and so. Why are their no rules regarding that? Because, as I've said before, as long as you are eligible by KHSAA regulations to play athletics your senior year of high school - it doesn't matter how old or what grade they should be in. PLAY BALL!!!! How's it strange???? The statement was made that AAU basketball is about...."developing better men". That is a joke! The majority of the people that are involved with AAU could care less about "developing better men". It's all about winning...at all costs! Don't get me wrong, winning is the name of the game, that's why they keep score. But don't try to hide behind the cloak of AAU and tell me it's about developing good sportsmanship and developing better men. If that was the case, we would do away with any age exception players and play everything straight up. And you wouldn't have people stretching the rules.

This is how I see it and my last comment on it. Not a joke in my mind at all. I coach a 11U team and each game I do everything in my power to win. Yes, we have 3 grade exemptions (good, smart kids with early birthdays who are not 6 foot tall :thumb:). Yes, the score does matter. But, all 9 of my players play and our focus is on improving them as basketball players and as MEN!! That is what I use AAU for. That is what AAU was designed to be. For those that use AAU for something different, I truly feel sorry for you. I hope that you enjoy those meaningless trophies from BCI, Hoops or wherever. What lesson did you really teach? As for me, I can go to sleep each night knowing that I am doing my best for my son and his teammates. And in a few years, I can sit back and smile as I watch the MEN that I used to coach lace them up in high school games. Now that will be a good day.
December 30, 200817 yr AAU at the higher levels are all about winning. Many players are involved in AAU for different reasons. Usually the very best players are on the elite teams and it's all about winning. The above average to average players are about development. IMO it can provide better competition than school ball and in some cases better coaching. Holding back kids is encouraged in some parts of KY. IMO you don't hear about it much in N. KY. I don't know when or why exemptions were created but it looks like there here to stay.

Amazing that your quoting rules by the number to back up the official... The thing is, four people (the official book, clock operator, a parent keeping a book and the Bulls Jr. Manager's book) all had the score right. The official still changed it.

I was responding to Boomer72 saying the official cannot change the score. I was just showing that by rule he can. Without knowing the situation fully I can't say whether the score should have been adjusted or not. Also, let's not act like the "official book" at SOAS is indeed the correct final word. The kids keeping the clock hardly pay attention and a volunteer is keeping the book. :thumb:
