Pikeville quit before halftime...absolutely gave up...should have gone ahead and gotten on the bus.

Good job Tomcats! Right from the opening kickoff, Ashland capitalized on a seemingly endless supply of Pikeville turnovers. In addition to a much needed win, this game provided some real positives for the Tomcats. Junior qb, Royalty seemed much more comfortable running the offense, the stable of running backs were all productive, and most of all, the O & D lines took control of this game very early on and didn’t let up. All in all, it was a great job with consistent effort by our guys in the trenches. Ashland’s depth on the line will be big factor in the success of this season. Defensively, well…it was a shut-out. I particularly enjoyed the goal line stands. Tackling skills were much improved from the opening performance, but we still need to get better. Pikeville backs had a couple of huge runs but the Ashland secondary covered well…bending but didn’t break.

 

Pikeville has talent, size and some notable speed but just hasn’t put all the parts together yet. Once they learn how to hold on to the football, things should improve.

O.K. I'll say it, I picked Pikeville in this one. I appollogize to the Tomcats and their fans for way underestimating them. I'm not so surprised by the win, it's just the score, wow. I thought Pikeville would need to go to Northern Kentucky to let that happen.

Congrats to the Tomcats on the win. A nice bounce back from last week's tough loss. I like to think my twins first ever Tomcat game was all the luck Ashland needed.

I'm very surprised at the final from this one. I thought Ashland would win, but not by this much.

 

Pikeville must have lost a ton of talent from last season.

 

I honestly don't know how much that they lost. From the way this one sounded it was the turnovers that cost them big in this one.

Pikeville will be fine, they are a good football team that just had a terrible night with the turnovers. JMO

First game = 4 fumbles, 1 interception

Second game = Loss count at 6 fumbles

 

If they figue out how to hold on to the football, they will win games

Harmon is an above average high school running back when he gets some help up front, but if a 5'8" tailback from eastern Kentucky is ever a serious candidate for Mr. Football then this state is very, very low on talent.

Seems like you don't give much credit to 1A schools. Ashland played two very good 1A programs. Raceland is very good, no matter what class, and Pikeville is not as good as normal this year - new head coach, and all new OL/DL.

 

I really don't get the class thing, Highlands is a very good program they are 3A by size but won the 5A state championship last year. I would say that Beechwood, LCA, and Hazard could beat a lot of 2A, 3A, 4A, and 5A teams, and they are all 1A.

 

Why can't people just say that a team got beat by a good team, instead of adding the class size?

 

I agree when you get beat by a great team just admit it I don't think of Raceland as just being a 1A team they have been a good football team the last several years.

The difference is Raceland won, & was/is the better "team". You need 11 good athletes on both sides of the ball, not just one. Evidently raceland has that, & Pikeville doesn't.

 

I agree a win over a noteworthy opponent will help the Tomcats, but I doubt class makes any difference. I'm sure if it was New Cath, Beechwood, or LCA most knowledgble football fans would consider that noteworthy.

 

Frankly, you can only beat whoever you schedule (non-district), and whoever is in your district, so any victory should be important.

In football size usually does matter.

1. It matters when its hot, and the 6a program has kids only playing 1 side of the ball.

2. It matters in controlling the line of scrimmage when the 6a average weight is usually much greater the 1A school.

The teams mentioned above are an exceptional group.

you make a great point, there are plenty of quality teams in the lower classes who are good enough to beat the big boys. Up here in NKY, Beechwood and NCC can handle themselves with the biggest of the big. Like you stated, classes only come into consideration when it's district time, and once the playoffs begin.
