October 24, 200817 yr Unless kid can dress/compete at the varsity level I dont agree with kids being pulled up. It simply improves Freshman and JV teams thats records dont matter. IMO some coaches do it to simply keep the kid in the program to make sure they dont go elsewhere. I have seen this numerous times be a negative for the kid. 8th grade year is the first true physical year of basketball, if they miss out on that it hurts them on down the line......thoughts? I think there are valid arguments for both, but I agree with waterboy.

October 24, 200817 yr I think there are valid arguments for both, but I agree with waterboy. The only reason I dont like it is because it breaks up team chemistry but you cant blame a HS coach for wanting to secure a player in their system.

October 24, 200817 yr I definitely agree that some coaches use for the reason of protecting a kid in their program. But, I disagree with your comment about 8th grade being the first true physical year of basketball. That may be true for the kid who only plays school ball, but the top players -- the ones that we are talking about moving up to freshman and JV -- have already competed at a higher level in AAU. Agree. At Russell 2 8th graders will play JV and Varsity. They have played AAU and have played physical basketball for 4 years on the AAU circuit. Not to mention, Russell basketball ain't Scott Co.

But the eighth grade (or any middle school record) does matter? Hard for me to follow this line of thinking, but it's not that big of deal to me. I'm not disagreeing with your entire post, just the bolded part. In general terms, many variables go into making a good decision on moving a kid up any level. None of those variables should include how many games a middle school team may win, or a middle school team potentially winning a sixth grade state title, as another poster mentioned.
October 25, 200817 yr Just heard that Lincoln County Middle has added Wayne County to the schedule as the first game of the season on November 10th. Should be a good 8th grade game - don't know much about the 6th and 7th of Wayne though.
