December 29, 200817 yr If we talk teamwork, we should stop referring to the AAU Bulls team as Summit View as there are other players involved not on the AAU team.. Hey we never mentioned the Bulls until now, correcting you... It says the AAU team, no name was mentioned...
December 29, 200817 yr Are you Serious!!! You're breaking down a kid's potential physical abilities when he's 13/14 years old and hasn't matured yet!! I tell you what...if you can do that then I need to follow you around because you're some kind of Prophet or something! I'm no prophet...but I do know if it quacks like a duck it a duck. Trust me you can tell if a 13/14 year old has potential or not. You don't have to be matured to dribble the ball with both hands or understand the game. Their other things that a immature player can do to let you know if he's a player at a young age. Like floor vision or being at the right spot on the floor. What Blue nation 12, saying is how does the palyer...play the game at this time at his age. Some are natural players at their sport. Yes, their always that one that comes from no were to surprise every one. I watched De Shawn Thompson, Play in the 8Th grade and I promise you... I knew he was special. I do think it hard to rank one player 1/10 over another at 12/14 years of age...but I do believe you can know talent when you see it at this age. It's easier to rank player by position at ages 12/14. Ive seen players 5' 11" in 5th grade/AAU teams be a great player... but play post. It's hard to play post in High School at 5' 11". If this is what your talking about I under stand your point. Teaching fundamental to every young player on a team is so important. I teach 3rd and 4th grade teams in my home town. I don't get wrapped up in winning with them. I want them to play hard and do the right things while on the floor. "Dribbling, Passing, Block Out, Rebound, Triple Threat, and play man to man D...Because you never know if a kid will be 5' 11" or 6' 10". Some players are athletic with out very good skills. Some are Skilled with little athleticism. The guys with both are the special ones...they just stick out.
December 29, 200817 yr Author Some kids are special and you know it, Some have special potential and you know it, some kids dominate because of the fact that they mature early and physically dominate. The ones that mature early usually end up not living up to their early billing. I agree if a kid has good basketball skills but have not started to mature they have a tremendous upside. It is just so hard to tell at this age but the ones that have "IT" are going to be players.
December 29, 200817 yr Clevenger's Sportsville is having a Middle School State Tournament Jan 10th. I believe it's 6th, 7th and 8th.
December 29, 200817 yr Lead Guards: He takes care of the ROCK! Can he read and understand what the defense is trying to do. Can he create his own shot and make others around him better. Can he dribble with both hands and not over dribble. Make good passes after dribble penetration. Can he shoot the jump shot and score from the free throw line". Quickens always helps a lead guard... Off Guard: Understand what the D is given him. Good low post passer from the wing. Consistent outside shooter... the 3 Point line in. Can he shoot off screens and make transition shots off the dribble or pass. Does he move well with out the ball. He must be able to Rebound and Shoot Shoot Shoot. Wingman: Quick fast running the floor and finish at the basket. He can hit a mid range jump shot or take his man off the dribble. Good post passer...Rebound Rebound Rebound....Must be a scorer scorer!!!!! Power man: Good foot work around the basket and good passer. Consistent mid range jump shot. Can Finish around the basket...Can Defend the low post and out on the perimeter. Strong player on offense and defense. Rebound Rebound Rebound... Five Man: Just like the Power man, Good Hands & foot work around the basket. " Power moves, Up under drop steps ect... Knows how to use his body to create offense and to play defense. Understands what the defense is trying to do too him. Know how to post people up and when to pass the ball back outside. Rebound Rebound Rebound!!! I know some of these player don't know all this..but their something you see in watching them. That says...hey he can do that if taught! The biggest thing is their basketball IQ, Athleticism and Attitude Attitude. You know every game can be an adventure with young players. They can go from looking like MJ to what the Heck. :scared: So dont watch a kid one time and pass judgment's. Good luck in your ranking!!! If Monroe and Mc Govney's not in your top 10. You need to to get out more:D Sorry, for being so long... Great breakdown.:thumb:

December 31, 200817 yr Whats on the schedule for teams around the state next week in your area? Highlands 8th takes on R.A Jones (Boone Co) on Monday and Sharp (PC) on Tuesday night. Should be a good game with R.A. Jones, they played Summit to the wire... But the next day Holmes blew them out... Not sure which team will show? I'm thinking you shouldn't have any problems with Sharp, not the same group from last year... Good Luck to all of your teams in the New Year...

Not sure which team will show?I'm thinking you shouldn't have any problems with Sharp, not the same group from last year... Good Luck to all of your teams in the New Year... That Holmes game with R.A. Jones was closer than the score showed. I think it was a 2 point game at half-time. Jones has a pretty good point guard and he sat out most of the 2nd half (not sure why - injury maybe?) and they couldn't really handle Holmes press without him. Also, it was a 10-15 point game with about 3-4 mins left in the game and the R.A. coach put in the bench, but the Holmes team kept their press on and ran up the score. I can sort of understand this as the tie-breaker for the tournament they were playing in was based on number of points given up, or something like that. That was the first time I had seen Holmes 8th grade play, and their press was pretty good. Jones handled it in the 1st half and forced Holmes to play their game, but Holmes forced the tempo in the 2nd half and Jones fell apart.
January 1, 200917 yr Author Clinton plays at Wayne next Saturday, 6th, 7th, and 8th. Dalton may not play in any of the games. Still should be really good 7th grade and 8th grade games. Wayne 6th and 7th are undefeated. Clinton 7th has lost 1, 8th has lost 2, 6th has lost 3. All 3 are nearing the 20 win mark.

January 1, 200917 yr Curious what everyone thinks regarding how important it is for each coach to develop their respective bench throughout the year? In Middle School ball.... Do you identify 5 - 8 top kids and focus on them or should you look to develop most, if not all, the kids on your team? Who is the best? I think most coaches try to develop their players in practice when the situation is ideal. When a team is playing 40/50 games because of the lack of practice time, he should play a lot more players. Winning is over-rated at this level. Teaching the game is much more important. You know what they say about putting your eggs all in one basket. A lot of kids at this age want to play basketball, they watch NCAA games and high school games and want to be apart of it. Then the real world sets in, they develop other or more important interests. Sometimes genetics play a great part and the kid with all the knowledge and experience is no longer the physical basketball specimen he once was. Lo and behold that puwnie little kid who sat at the end of the bench learning everything has grown into a healthy young man and he has no experience. High School coaches see these kids every year, actually they see more of these kids than the ones you are pumping up and bragging about on here.

High School coaches see these kids every year, actually they see more of these kids than the ones you are pumping up and bragging about on here. I agree with you - so many kids ride the bench and barely see any action and then once they reach high school they decide they have no chance of playing so they develop other interest. I know a few of these kids and they are usually the ones in the gym classes putting it to the so call high school stars. How's far as playing a lot of games during the season and others not getting enough playing time - there are a lot middle schools that do not play a lot of games because of transportation issues (as they state) and other cited issues (they state) so I guess that some coaches believe they must attempt to win at all cost and don't play a lot of their bench.
January 1, 200917 yr To many parents think that winning at all cost is the final judgment. These are the same parents who are normally coaching from the stands. A lot of these parents are also teaching the wrong things at home. A good middle school or anything below JV/Varsity coach spends a lot of times talking to his players on the bench and involves all of them in time outs. When you have a coach who just sits and lets them play or is more involved with "helping" the officials, that is not a coach interested in developing your kid he is more interested in his own "stats" (W-L).
