Highlands/Male Scrimmage

Featured Replies

Hate to hear about Josh Connor being injured, I sure hope he is going to recover and be back out on the field soon. The Birds sound like they have plenty of things to work on before they can be even close to where they were at the end of 2007.

Bathiany was a luxury the Birds truly miss, especially for his rocket shots into and out of the endzone. I wish the best for the Frank boy and hope he can also return sooner than later. Football is a brutal sport and injuries are part of the game. It just stinks that the Birds have to suffer through this at this point in time.

If someone could post an update on JC's injury that would be nice. All Bird Fans are anxiously awaiting. But like Sticky said, they have plenty of depth at RB and I am sure they will step up in JC's absence.

I'm a little surprised by this outcome. I hadn't heard a lot of confidence coming out of the Male camp this preseason.

Hate to hear about the RB's injury. Best of luck to him.

Sorry I was unable to stop by and see you all. Work went later than I thought and had to get home.

Male has a nice squad. Of course Green is a stud. Not only is he FAST, but he runs with more power than one would expect. Keeps the legs churning and doesn't go down easily. Line play is definitely improved from last year. Not having seen T or X, I have no idea whether Male with challenge for the state title.

All in all, but for the injury to Conner, it was a pretty decent scrimmage for the very young and inexperienced Birds. We ran the ball pretty well, particularly in light of Male's press D. Crawford had to come away from this game with a big confidence boost. Pass defense was pretty good other than defending the quick dump pass to their TE. Run defense wasn't bad (particularly in light of the fact that two of our starting defense linemen were out. I did think Dierig, Fennell and Beck did a very admirable job filling in for them). We have to do a better job wrapping up. We had problems catching the shotgun snap with most of those problems (from what I saw) caused by the QB taking his eyes off the snap to find Male's blitzing lbers. That's a problem easily fixed. Most snaps were either on the money or certainly catchable.

I thought we'd struggle early in the season with all the new starters. I expect us to be a very good team by mid season and an exceptionally good team by the end of the year IF we can make the injury bug to away.

I'm reassured to read LN's post. These HHS players didn't experience any setbacks last year, as they went 2-0 in the preseason, 15-0 in the regular/postseason and did not have to deal with any significant injuries last year. Hopefully the feeling of losing a game (even though it was just a scrimmage) and being without the team's go-to player for at least awhile will quickly get all the players'/coaches' attention and progress will be made quickly. Crawford and Head are really going to need to step up in the offensive backfield this year, and now more than ever HHS will need a reliable passing game to go along with the rushing attack... it's time for Guidugli and Bardo to really get down to the business of leading the offense. I am sure they can handle it!

Here's to Conner having a speedy and complete recovery within the next few weeks! HHS will need to make lemonade out of lemons and turn this into a plus... for one, I wouldn't mind at all having TWO experienced, first-rate, battle-tested RB's (Conner and Crawford) come playoff time, instead of just one!!!!!

And now, I am going to resume banging my head against a wall! Gosh, even though it is "just" a scrimmage, I do HATE it when the Highlands football team finishes ANYTHING (championship game, season opener, preseason scrimmage, 7 on 7 passing contest, back yard touch football game, whatever!) with fewer points on the board than their opponent! And I KNOW that the players/coaches feel this 3 times as much as I do!! Get to work boys!

With all that has been said about this scrimmage, good and bad, Highlands still almost won. That says a lot about the type of team HHS has this year. Fix the mistakes and this game(sorry Male, even without Conner), HHS wins by 2 td or more. I for one am confident in this team. And I think most are on the same page. Last night was frustrating on the fans part because maybe we are spoiled a little :D and now with a little adversity, some frustration came out. That's why they play scrimmages. Hey, it beats being a Bengal Fan. At least there is hope.

I watched Cody Rosenhagen last night rally his players to not give up and for the most part they didn't. It will take senior leadership like that to take this team to Louisville and win #18. Hopefully he and others understand that.

Not to worry. They are still up there and have been there since before 9.

#22 from Male is a class act! After the game as both teams were headed to the locker rooms, #22 from Male came all the way across the field to shake hands and hug Josh Conner. I was standing in the endzone by JC's dad and he was just as impressed with the sportsmanship!

Good luck to the young man from Male and to the entire Male squad towards a great 2009!

JB, you must really love the BlueBirds. Sometimes you have to just give the other guys credit. I used to feel like you about Bama football. but I've learned not to take it so serious. it was a practice game, and good luck to you and the Birds and I'm pulling for Josh...for what its worth as he was knocking our guys down on his run I told my son...."he is gonna be hard to stop".

I hate to see anyone get hurt. My son missed his senior year as a Goalie due to an injury and it still haunts me.

Also Bird lovers y'all had a TD when the kid lost the ball into the endzone, and we got a touchback.

Yeah no biggie. The zebras missed a few tonight. Actually they called a ton of whatever. It's a scrimmage for them also. Too bad it effects the kids though. I would venture to say they have been doing this for quite sometime. I'm sure that group is one of the best down in Louisville with what teams that were playing. You would think they could get it right. Moving on!

You lose a great back in the first series and it hurts. I put the glasses on the kid sitting on the bench and my heart went out for him, I told my son he might have a major propblem.

He plays and the Birds win easy.

You are exactly right.

, If he doesn't get hurt, Birds win.

Sorry to here about the Highlands running back. From what I saw he was a very good player. Would of been nice to see him and Green go back in forth in offensive series. I must say Male did a good job and has improved much from last years team. But as far as the offensive line improving I don't much agree with that. One returning starter on the line and loosing three all district seniors. I would say last year had the edge. Green is getting better as a back and he is making his young but talented line look good.

If "ifs and buts" were candy and nuts, oh what a wonderful Christmas we would all have?
