Your Greatest Sports Moment

Featured Replies

I'm sure the majority of BGP members played sports growing up. What was your personal greatest sports moment ?

I've got a few.

When I was in little league, we were playing in the championship game of our state all star tournament. I can't remember the name, but we were playing a team from Louisville. The game had gone in to extra innings. Bottom of the 8th, we were down 1 run. 2 outs a man on second and a 2 ball 2 strike count. I hit a walk off home run that ended the game. This is probably my favorite sports moment. I still have the ball setting in a trophy case.

In Babe Ruth, I pitched a complete game, 1 hitter striking out 18 batters. The next week I pitched a no hitter, striking out 16.

This one comes in a close second to the walk off home run story. My senior year of High School we were playing our last football game of the regular season against Lawrence County. We were down 7 with around 5 minutes left in the game. We drove the length of the field and scored with around 2 minutes left. Our kicker missed the extra point leaving us down 1 with 2 minutes left. We get the onside kick, put together another impressive drive and score with less than 30 seconds on the clock to put us up 5. Even a lineman like myself can find glory in that one. We later went on to win our schools first playoff game in 17 years.

How about the rest of you ?

Brag on yourself a little....

I had a double-double in my first Varsity basketball start; I hit a home-run in knothole about a year after batting .000 on the season ( mixture of a broken elbow and no talent); took a game-winning, buzzer-beating charge in 8th grade basketball. I tore my ACL for my senior season and never was much a scorer anyways, I guess I was like the equivalent of a football lineman when I played basketball.

Striking out Doug Pelfrey twice my junior year in High School and throwing a 3 hit shutout vs. Scott High School on a windy day in Taylor Mill in front of a couple MLB scouts there to watch Doug. I believe they went on to win the region that year. I couldnt get leadoff hitter Scotty Smith out though as he was 3-3 and had all 3 hits.

Old Charlie Leftin (former Reds Scout) was there and I was friends with his grandson Jeff who played at Beechwood, he gave me some nice props which was cool. Obviously nothing ever came of it. LOL

HS Basketball- Beating NCC in Districts my Senior year up at their place on the hill to advance to finals and a spot in the 9th Region tournament. Packed house and I think I had 14 pts and dealt out 9 assist that night.

Dealing out the game winning assist my sophomore year as point guard to Greg Schwerijohan who came around the picket fence and hit a buzzer beater from 19 feet in the corner vs. Dayton. Great draw that year as well, the win put us in the finals of District and spot in Region Tournament.

Throwing a No-hitter for Gravett's Garage when I was 9 yrs old down in the Bellevue VEts T-shirt League. Those were the best times, played 8 yrs down there and loved every minute. Especially loved the cream soda's the coaches would buy us after the games.

Finally, in football my Freshman year we beat Beechwood in the Championship game. We only had 12 players on our team that year and they called us the Dirty Dozen. The one lone kid that was on the sideline was 5'2 and might have weighed 125lbs. It was weird how it worked out that we had all 11 position players and we all went both ways. I threw a ton of bombs that year to 6'3 225lb 8th grader Dennis Chinn who was a HAAS at the time. Could never beat the Beechies in Varsity play though.

I'll try to do a top-10 list:

1) Magoffin County vs. Pikeville in the first round of the 15th Region Tourney - 1995

Tie game with about 7 seconds left and I saw a little daylight from about 30 feet or so. I pulled up and fired it with my coach screaming "no, no, no!" Nothing but net and an awesome celebration as the Hornets advanced to the next round. :thumb:

2) Another great moment was playing with Alice Lloyd College against Oak Hill Academy. I'll never forget the experience of guarding Stephen Jackson and playing in their gym - which is more like a museum of retired jersey's and memorabilia.

3) I'll always remember my first touchdown and first interception in high school football, as well

Some other things that stand out:

4) Scoring 66 points in a Morehead City League game

5) Scoring 54 points in fraternity intramurals at Morehead - 40-minute running clock

6) Scoring 61 points in a Morehead City League game with 16 3-pointers

7) Winning an intramural basketball championship at Alice Lloyd

8) Winning 3 intramural basketball championships at Morehead

9) Winning the Morehead City League championship in basketball

10) Winning the gold medal in basketball a few times at the Bluegrass Games

A hole in one.

If you didn't play sports or don't have a story to tell, feel free to take a page from your grandpa's book and just make one up:lol:

Playing on Rupp Arena's floor my senior year and shooting 1 for 1 in the class A tournament. First win in a state tournament in school history.

Fraternity Basketball Championship this past April. We were playing a rather tough team, with all of our brothers and theirs as well...plus another 50+ sorority girls...and my parents were actually there too. I went 7-7 from 3pt and some of my shots were from deep and nasty. Ended up scoring a total of 26 points and won the championship. Best game I have ever played.

A few I didn't mention earlier.

1.) I blocked 2 punts in one Varsity game as a Freshman.

2.) This one is kind of funny. Football, my junior year. We we're running a screen pass that didn't go for many yards and was eventually a fumble. I was behind the play. It had been drilled in my head for many years that as a lineman, just fall on the ball. Not today. It was like the ball was in slow motion rolling towards my feet. I knew this was my moment. I picked up the ball and carried it for 28 yards including a "playstation like" spin move on the other teams all state middle line backer. As I approached to goal line I felt arms wrap around me and knew it just wasn't meant to be. I was tackled on the 2 yard line. Guess who I was tackled by ? Yup, the line backer I put the spin move on. He managed to get up and use a combination of his speed and how slow I was to catch and tackle me.

That one got a lot of laughs in the film room the next practice.

I have a couple:

1 - 1994 State Championship game -vs- Boone County, I had a pretty big game...

2 - in intramurals at Trinity my senior year we averaged 29.5 ppg, we finished second, but if you saw the team I was on, that was a huge achievement

3 - I bowled a 287 once.

WITNESSED & FELT

1A. My daughter's fastpitch softball team winning 2 state championships

1B. When my son's North Laurel football team upset Madison Central (Her-Leader called it the biggest upset in the state that season)

2A & B. My daughter's first over the fence homerun & my son's first varsity TD

PERSONALLY PARTICIPATED

1. Beating Rod Woodson & Chris Dishman at the same time in the 60meter dash at the Indoor TAC Championships at IU.

2. Setting collegiate school records in most of the sprints & qualifying for the college national championships.

3. Setting high school records in 3 events

4. Competing in the collegiate national championships (I can say I was smoked by some of the fastest men in the world, most of whom ran in the Olympics for their various countries)

5. My first varsity touchdown (1981 against Newport Catholic)

6. Beating former Olympian Ivory Crockett at the Mason Dixon games in college (he wasn't in very good shape, but I can still say that I beat him)

Winning All A State Championship in soccer and basketball.

Winning Regionals in soccer.

Hitting two HR's in my first two AB's against CovCath my junior year. Had never hit a home run before that.
