Topwater fishing

Featured Replies

I like to use a pearl white super fluke and twitch it across the surface like its a skipping minnow. After a few twitches, I'll let the bait flutter down and just when it's getting out of sight I'll get it back to the surface and skip it again. This seem's to work well at Norris Lake or any lake that is very clear.

Nope, still have 2 of the original Bill Norman triple wings which are now being made by Strike King. Is the quarterback a crankbait?

Yes, It floats on top until you begin retrieve. I used to do pretty well with them. I would flip it back in timber or twitch it parallel off fallen timber or rock walls. Most strikes were just as it hit the water.

The downside of the QB was that catfish loved them as much as bass.

Love throwing a "splash it" or a fluke. I also love the Whitey on the river. I have 3 that I bought a few years ago. Last I remembered you had to ask for them and that he had them behind the counter at the tackle box.

:thumb: Yep, those things are not going to be the secret anymore. Too much mention. Not really, the word has been getting ou on the Whitey more and more over the last couple of years........Dang It!!:irked::D

I caught a drum on top water last Fri. morning.. I've been fishing for over 40 years and it was a first for me.. I've caught plenty of drum on crank baits and bottom fishing but never on a surface lure.. Anyone else??

That secret is out and just now has been printed :D. I have a couple in my tackle box and you are correct, "Whitey" is an absolute killer anywhere, especially on the river.
Thanks for the secret boys. 4 pounder on a Whitey friday.:dancingpa

Congrats...and on that one in your avatar as well.

Another note about the "whitey", a buddy of mine was bass fishing at Cave Run a while back, tied on a whitey and threw it.....2nd cast a "toothy critter" claimed that bait as his own. The musky took one dive/run and became the proud owner of a whitey and my friend was out a bait.

Was in the TackleBox today, no whities. Owner said he got one shipment and some goober from Greenup Co. bought the last one!:p

Only teasing. So, I sucked it up and bought myself another Sammy!:D

Just went to the Bass Pro fishing classic and loaded up on tons of stuff today. Can't wait!!

If you want to have some fun, get a bait that favors shad and floats on top of the water. Cast it as far as you can and emulate a dying baitfish. Just twitch it slightly - just enough to vibrate the water. Every 30 seconds or so, jerk a little more violently. Just use your instincts to make it look like a dying fish would look as its taking its last few breaths.

This will work best post-spawn when the water starts heating up. I use a silver, floating shad that has red streaks (blood) on the tail. If you can locate bass, musky, or other really aggressive predators - you can bring them completely out of the water on the strike.
